Group Ride Leaders - How they are picked? And how do they lead?

When ya'll go on a groups ride who leads and why? Is it just the first guy out of the parking lot? Is it the fastest guy? The dude with the biggest ego?

Have you ever questioned the leader or want someone else to lead? Or did you just take over the lead from someone you thought was incompetent or doing a bad job? or do you simply take turns?

I have lead a few rides with Tmax as the sweep. There were times when he would run up to the front and create holes in the traffic for everyone to get through quicker. When he would do that I would drop back and sweep. It worked pretty well usually.

So do ya'll want the leader to stop at the turn so everybody knows where to turn or is that the job of each person in the train to make sure the person behind them knows where to go?

Ehh, The way it has been done is the lead stops at any direction change/ intersection till he sees the sweep. Sweep gives a quick thumbs up and off everyone goes.

I'll follow anyone I trust. For me to trust you I have to ride with you a few times, or you with me.

I mean I guess that would work. But sometimes there is a BIG disparity of abilities and you would have to wait a while for the sweeper to arrive. We usually leave it to each member of the chain ESPECIALLY IF ITS HOT nothing like sweating your off waiting for some newbies.

Oh, I have been left behind on a couple rides as the sweep. Group did a direction change and didn't wait. Luckily I knew the area and where the group would end up. Scared the out of em though when they realized I was gone. LOL

I hate leading.

But Iĺm also like to roll that throttle when I want to hook some corners together.
