Major Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment

This is mind-boggling. This research was started to better treat chemo-resistant head, neck and brain cancers. The short version is that they attach chemo drugs and gold to cancer seeking antibodies. The antibodies take the chemo drugs directly into the cancer cells. Then, they hit the tumor with a laser, which effectively boils the meds and releases them directly into the tumor. Then they hit the tumor with low dose X-rays, which is amplified (only in the tumor) by the gold.

Quote:
When the system was tested in mice with aggressive, chemotherapy resistant head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, it was found to be so effective that only between 2-6% of the normal clinical doses of drugs and X-rays were required. Furthermore, the tumors were eliminated within just week one of administering the therapy and the surrounding normal tissues were spared.

neat. Now we have to wait a decade before it's FDA approved, and another 2 before joe-sickpack can afford it.

Maybe not. Article states the process is a combination of four treatments that are already chemically approved.

Well then, let's hope my timetable is pessimistic.

With the changes to the FDA approval procedures that came about under Clinton, the time frame was reduced significantly. Three years, I think, and the FDA no longer has to do their own research. They just go by the notes of the researchers, which is part of the reason for all these class action lawsuits for vaginal mesh, hip replacements and the like.

This should speed it up substantially.

Why did I type "chemically". I meant "clinically".
