Camera Lens question (Nikon D40)

Hey guys, quick question for you... I'm considering getting a new lens for a Nikon D40 camera. What would be a quality lens to pick up that would be decent for anything from slower pictures to bikes at the track... pretty much just a general use lens that's better than the factory one which blows. Thanks.

for action, i would get a lens with a bigger apeture, like of 2.8.
thats what the professionals do for thier shots. nikon's 2.8 lenses are wayyyy expensive though.

here is the solution. get a sigma 70-200 2.8 (800) or a sigma 18-50 2.8 (500)

i have the 18-50, and am getting the 70-200 soon. the 70-200 is for the large format cameras, so your camera will have a magnification factor of 1.5, making the true mm really 105-300mm 2.8.
That combination will be perfect for shots at the track, where you have to be farrrr away but still get a fast shot.

i am a highschool sports photographer, ill cite that as my source.

i suggest going to either camera Co-op on duram between washington and memorial, or Houston Camera Exchange on richmond near hilcroft. both have reasonable prices, and will help with anything.

i only shoot sigma lenses with my nikon. same quality, but you can knock about half the price. i would not reccomend tamron or anything else.

good luck shooting!!
