Indeed... Its quite sad that the real news never makes it out to the MSM. Grotesque really that our media is no better now days than some kind of corporate capitalist propaganda machine.

Unless my reading comprehension has failed me, that article has nothing to do with the video. It is a synopsis of Japan's agricultural issues, which need to be reformed with or without membership in the TPP. The only reason the TPP was mentioned in the article is because Japan will not join the TPP unless they are granted certain agricultural exemptions. Got anything worthwhile to add to this discussion?

At least one legitimate concern mentioned in the video was the patent extensions for big pharma. There are countries that could benefit both economically and medically if big pharma patents expired SOONER. Some countries cannot afford to import vaccines and other medications, and the existing patents prevent these countries from building facilities to produce vaccines and medications (generic versions). Once the patent expires these countries can start manufacturing generic versions of medications, which both gives people jobs and brings affordable medication to an area that was previously unable to obtain it. With the patent extensions mentioned in the video, the TPP would put an end to generic medications...eliminating the economic and medical benefits they can generate. Now, this is just part of the effect patent extensions would have on poor countries. How many people in this country have to take generic versions of much-needed medications because the name brand medication is too expensive?

It's not a reply to the OP or any post for that matter, it's just a story related to the TPP

so, we are all for telling someone how long something they create is theirs, all in the name of the economy and common good? Stealing is ok when it is for a "good" purpose!!!!

Not exactly. The way I see it, patent laws protect the creator of a product to allow them to make money from that creation for a period of time, then expire to prevent a monopoly on that product. Patents expiring allow competition within a market, resulting in a better product, a less expensive product, or both.

In my opinion, the competition should come from someone creating a better product, not taking someone else's known success and information and making the same thing. Unless you buy their patent.

I say this as someone who can only afford generics though.

as you see it, others if they have the numbers, can get together and decide how long you should benefit from YOUR efforts, YOUR discovery... and then they can say, ok it is ours now...
There is no such thing as a monopoly on a PRODUCT...you want to compete fairly, invent something better, something that does the same thing cheaper, more efficiently, but don't take theirs and call it yours. a better product is not what doing away with a patent does, it makes that product available for production by anyone, not just the one who invented it. IT IS MORALZING STEALING.

pharma patent laws are merely the tip of the iceberg.

Why not extend all patents in a similar fashion across all industries?

that is a good question. why not? what right does anyone anytime have to take the efforts of others for their own profit...stealing what others have done is NOT competition. it is welfare.

Does this mean, that as a matter of principle, you do no buy products that are only available under other names because their original patents expired?

problem is, you do not always know that is the case...
I am not a drugist, I do not know which drugs came first and which are minor variations of others...but I do not ask for generics if that is what you are asking...with my meds, I take what ever it is the doctor has prescribed
