Companies? Usually you get a patent (relatively easy) on your idea through the US patent office...but you will have to search to make sure there's no patent already.

Another way is to make a prototype and shop it around to VC's. Guess it really depends on what you're inventing....new can opener or a perpetual motion machine.

Not easy, and not cheap. I have $4700 and 5 years into one so far.
