I don't know about common, but anything can happen. My guess is the guy who went straight stayed on the gas too long and then panicked. I've done the same thing, just never cut across the front of another rider like that. I think one would see more of that type of thing in intermediate level as there is a broad range of skill level on the track at the same time.
