I've never even owned a pair of shorties.

Most gauntlet gloves have 2 wrist closures, a strap and the outer cuff. Although I doubt you could pull a gauntlet off easier than a shorty, the point is that shorties have no wrist protection. If your jacket sleeve (you ARE wearing a jacket, right?) slides up you are gonna have a damaged wrist.
That's not to mention, impact protection on the outer wrist bone is nonexistant with shorties.
