yeah , i used to be really into reptiles, i could probably give you some good advice. first off, a monitor is going to be a big commitment. iguanas are the most thrown away pet there is because people buy them and don't realize what they are commiting to. www.kingsnake.com has some really good forums, i'd bookmark them since you will probably be having lots of questions. petco's cheap enough when it comes to getting heat lamps and a few cage decorations. for fluorescent UVB bulbs, which i'm not sure if your monitor requires or not, i'd check around online. it'll need a humongous cage and lots of cleaning up, etc. make sure you are really ready to commit to that or you should take it back asap. if you have any questions, let me know and i'll try to help.

not the brightest idea to buy a nile monitor unless you got some serious space and commitment and like buying chickens and rabbits to feed.
however if you are going to keep one...
heat rocks are bad! they will burn your reptiles! What you need is is a ceramic heat lamp (no light, just heat) set up at one side of enclosure. Make sure that there is a warm area (heat lamp side) and a cool area and that there is a water tub that the lizard can soak in and make sure that the rest of the enclosure is dry and sterile.
If you can't provide this while the lizard is small, just think how difficult it will be when you have a monster.
Good Luck

yep, it's a major commitment and +1 on the heat rocks. they can short out, get real hot and fry the animal. they are a big no-no in the herp community. also be careful which substrate you use and make sure you give it appropriate sized food so it doesn't get a gut impaction. google "nile monitor caresheet" and you'll be able to get a good idea of what you are getting into.

well, you need to be sure it's hot enough, do you know their temperature, humidity, space, food, etc etc requirements?? heat lamps are the way to go, i think a fixture might be 12$ and a bulb maybe 5$ you will probbaly need a higher wattage one since I hope the cage is big. what's the setup like?
