Former Trooper Dies in Motorcycle Crash

This happened last night on the loop in my hometown of Nacogdoches. I knew the guy through local law enforcement affiliations and b/c it's a small town. His brother and my brother went to highschool together. It's a shame and seems like it could have been prevented if had been riding a little more "ahead" of himself (defensively) and also wearing a helmet.

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

A former state trooper died in Nacogdoches Tuesday night after a car struck the motorcycle he was driving.

Arthur Ryan Koonce, 31, was northbound on Loop 224 at 9:29 p.m. when a southbound Toyota 4-Runner, driven by Paul D. Darden, of Nacogdoches, turned right onto a private drive, striking Koonce's 2004 Victory Vegas motorcycle.

Koonce was ejected from the motorcycle and died from his injuries at Memorial Hospital later in the evening. He was not wearing a helmet, according to Nacogdoches Police Sgt. Greg Sowell.

Darden was uninjured in the wreck.

Sowell said police were also investigating the role that alcohol may have played in the crash.

"According to the accident report (Darden) indicated that he had consumed alcohol," Sowell said.

Results of blood tests were pending Wednesday morning, and no citations or charges had been filed against Darden, But Sowell said an arrest could be made after results of laboratory tests are returned.

"No arrests have been made in this accident, and no charges have been filed at this time. The investigation will continue, and results of laboratory tests are pending," Sowell said in a statement.

The accident is still under investigation by the Nacogdoches Police Department using accident reconstruction and other techniques.

Koonce is well known for his role in the 2005 drug bust of a truck driver caught driving through Nacogdoches County with more than $2.3 million in drug money hidden in a load of frozen chicken.

Since June 4, he had served as a reserve deputy constable in precinct 4 under Constable Jason Bridges.

"He's a great guy and a good officer and he will very much be missed," Bridges said Wednesday.

Koonce was the son of David Koonce, the former city of Lufkin human resources director, who died of cancer last October.

What I don't get though, is how does a northbound biker get hit by a southbound truck making a RIGHT turn?

Just a follow up.. The funeral was perfect. Over 100 persons from varying offices: DPS, Constables and deputies, SO, several PD's, GW's, fire, and Air Force. Ryan was a fantastic trooper and officer. A lot of respect and honor went into the funeral and is was gut wrenching when the both the Texas flag and American flag were presented to the family after the playing of Taps.

RIP Ryan and prayers to the family and close friends.
