Young couple from Houston Gixxers die this weekend

Young Houston couple killed in Austin motorcycle accident

07:11 PM CDT on Sunday, June 14, 2009

By Kevin Reece / 11 News

AUSTIN, Texas -- Two people killed in a motorcycle accident in Austin this weekend have been identified as a young married couple from Cypress in Northwest Harris County.

Eric Kaufman and his wife Rosse Torres, both 23, were traveling with a group of bikers to the Republic of Texas Motorcycle Rally. Texas State Troopers say Kaufman lost control of the bike in a curve. Torres was riding as the passenger when the bike skidded on its side and then began to flip.

On Sunday, the Torres family attached a large black ribbon to their home in Cypress and placed a picture of the young couple on a small table shrine in their entryway. Torres’ father openly admitted it was a motorcycle trip he begged his daughter not to take.

“I told her don’t go with him nowhere,” said Jorge Torres. “Let him go alone. I don’t want you go on the motorcycle with him because it’s dangerous.”

Jorge Torres says his son-in-law had limited experience on motorcycle -- perhaps as little as six months. But other family members say the pair had joined the motorcycle group Houston Gixxers for the ride to the Austin rally and were excited about their first big road trip.

In the group’s Internet postings, which feature motorcyclists performing wheelies and other stunts on Houston freeways and streets, a club member says that if new riders stay within their limits and ride at the very back of the group they should be just fine. Their trips, the posting goes on to say, are all about having good, safe fun.

Troopers say both Kaufman and Torres were wearing helmets.

The young couple leaves behind two young children: a 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old daughter.

wow. I hadn't been on there in a while. That's horrible news to hear about the children.

??? Not Sure ???

I wonder if it was a case of "object fixation" and over reacting with "brake control". Also I wonder if he had a class M and MSF? Not saying its his fault, just that it seems since they both had helmets on and no one lived... Anything is possible.

Eric & Rosse were closes friends of mine. Eric is a type of guy that if he had two dollars he would give you half. When I heard the news couldn't believe it. Eric knew how to ride, but I will say Eric was riding his new gixxer. I have been on many rides with the couple. Eric & Rosse you will be missed. RIP

Houston Gixxer is a great group of riders. We treat every one in the group as family.

With only having 6 months of experience the ROT rally doesn't seem like the best place to ride 2 up.

Met this guy a couple of weeks ago. He took the Group Riding Class with us. Great guy, kept the class entertained the whole time. Even talked to me afterwards about having his wife take the BRC.

I don't care much for the article talking about "In the group’s Internet postings, which feature motorcyclists performing wheelies and other stunts on Houston freeways and streets,". I guess I missed that part on their web forum.

Agreed. I am friends with a # of HG's and they are a good bunch. They don't deserve that type of pigeonholeing.

I don't know the couple, but they sound like good people. what really strikes it home for me though is the fact that I also have a 3yo son and a 1yo daughter. I couldn't imagine my kids going through that and it breaks my heart to think of anyone else's kids having this fate. sooo terrible.
