I'm on the fence, now, with this issue. But I agree w Pyro.

And also ban phone usage (text & handheld) from novice drivers too. Minnesota implemented that law while I was in high school. It sucked but I understood.

It's banned in New York state. I saw cops issuing tickets at intersections.

They don't mess around up there. 20 over and they'll take your license away and tow your car - on the spot.

Drugs are illegal..... And people still sale them, and use them!!!

So whats banning texting and driving going to do??? A person thats really good at texting you will never know that they are texting unless you are on foot and the vehicle is stopped... Its almost unrealistic for a cop to try and stop someone for texting and driving

would be interesting to ban cell phones altogether, a culling of the herd if you will. its no wonder so many people are depressed and ADD riddled. cant even sit on the crapper without getting text messages or someone calling you. if you dont respond people(women) get their feelings hurt.

but honestly, yes i think they should be banned at least on the freeways. you never know when a landscaping truck will launch a shovel out of its trailer at 65 mph and you need to see it coming

I know his wife says yes! Hands free only. I am in Washington State right now, and it is only legal to use the hands free device. I have been watching, and have only seen 4 people on their phones while driving, so after watching for 4 days... it seems people here do take it seriously. Back home, it is usually almost every other car. I'd like to see the statistics for the states with hands free only laws. Has it made a difference?

Most people in Houston just need to retake their drivers test. Assuming they every took it in the first place. Police need to enforce people who text while driving, have unsecured cargo, and drive below the speed limit in the left lane.

I find it few and far between to not see an HPD officer yakking away on his/her cell phone. It would be interesting to see the minute usage on LEO's phone bills. I'll bet they are gabbing 50% of their shifts.

I'd be a lot happier if they just banned landscaping trucks from launching shovels out of their trailers at 65 mph.

I use a hands free system, but I do not think its the gubberments business what I do in my car as long as I am not affecting drivers.

Personnel Responsibility has to come in somewhere?

My wife has Microsoft Sync in her car synced up with her cell. She can press one button on her steering wheel (right next to her radio controls) and either say a contact name or number and it dials.

Looking down to dialing or text is definitely the worst. I personally think hands free is OK.

Seriously, banning entirely would just lead to arguments that people should not talk to other passengers, adjust their stereo and even turn up the A/C. All of which are monetary distractions. We used to have the same arguments about changing a music tape in the car back in the 80's.

New technology, very old arguments.
