whatever, i've discussed w/ you my personnal beliefs on this topic, the MSF offical stance is DOT is min. you need and SNELL is a lil better.

why worry about the MSF, yuo didn't care for the program anyways.

Check out this article from Motorcyclist. The cheaper helmet (ZRP-1 $80) actually protected just as well if not better.

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/hatz/

BTW: Hyundai is actually "safer" than Mercedes in crash tests. For example 2006 Sonata earned 5 star crash ratings on front, rear, and both sides. A Mercedes E class, however, only earned 4 stars on the sides. The old mantra of "you get you pay for" does not always apply.

Not knocking the Benz in any way. They are actually very safe vehicles. In fact I remember when the ML sport utilities first came onto the market one of the advertisements was a 20 ft drop on the roof of the vehicle. Very safe, just not the safest, but in the top 10.

the quality of materials used during construction of high end helmets vs lower end helmets comes into play when asking what you get for your dollar. With that being said, a scorpion helmet is a great buy for the money, but this debate is about why pay so much more for a helmet isn't it? The manufacturing standards of Arai, Shoei, ets is far superior to that of lower end helmets. Said helmets are manufactured to such tight tolerances, arai and shoei throw away more helmets in a day than you may ever see in your lifetime!!! Will it save your life the same way as a decent midrange helmet? Yes! but at what speed? HJC, KBC, ICON(made in the HJC plant i believe) are all DOT approved, they have to be to be sold in the local stealerships. In my semi professional opinion, the higher the cost of a helmet, the higher speed crash worthiness it will have. If you Wad your bike up at 100+MPH, a high end helmet will protect you better than a low end or midrange helmet, and that is a fact(i will provide documentation tomorrow at work). With all of that being said, the average rider, who goes down at 45-75MPH will get the same benefits from an HJC as he will an Arai. It's the guy who rides hard and rides fast that benefits from the high end helmets in case of an accident.(That's why Pro racers and trackday riders usually use high end helmets) Take all of this with a grain of salt, b/c i am no helmet manufacturer, but i sell helmets daily, and i know a little bit about them. Hope this cleared up a little bit of confusion. for further questions about helmet safety, PM me, and ill gladly get back with you.

I would bet sponsorship/advertising plays a bigger role in their selection.

why? either your gonna buy an ARAI/SHOEI or not. you can believe the hype or not.

this is again my opinion:

if they adv. their helmet as the best then somebody dies, their gonna get sued. every accident is diff. and they can test till the cows come home, but no matter how many test they do, people will still get hurt/die. they pass the min. gov't standards, adv. what makes their helmets better (materials, construction), then let you make a decision. these time are full of stupid lawsuits.

i've read that ARAI doesn't pay racers to wear their lids, and that they wear "off-the shelf" helmets

vs custom made lids w/ HJC/AGV stickers on..

but thats all hearsey.
