but what do you base the opinion on? I'm not trying to argue, I seriously want to know if people pay so much money for more protection or if they are posers or if it's got some other properties that would actually make someone spend 6-700$ extra

me, i've always worn top flite headgear, when i raced mt bikes/road bicycles, my lids were $150.......i broke 3 of them, and i'm still talking/walking.

would a cheaper helmet worked, maybe/maybe not. i'm not gonna risk it.

and my wife agree's w/ my choice. so we buy me the best i can get/afford.

and yeah, i'm willing to pay $150 more for a custom paint job vs plain black/white/grey

risk what? i'm trying to understand your logic. It costs more so it must be better? You can get a pair of underwear from wal-mart for 50 cents that will last you forever and you can get a pair of tommy hilfiger for 30$ that fall apart in 2 weeks.

I've had my hjc for 3 yrs now. I should probably look into getting a new helmet, seeing as how this one saw a get-off 13 months ago today. I might look at getting a matte black scorpion, shoei, or arai.

i don't know. i'm not familiar with their safety ratings. i guess, for the sake of your arguement, mercedes must be better. but cars have safety ratings and all of that. Do motorcycle helmets? If so, then that would be proof enough for me if you could show them to me. Otherwise, you've shown one thing where a drastically higher price means higher quality and i've shown one where it does not and we haven't really gotten anywhere.

i prefer a "bright" lid for visibilty, IMO helmet visibilty is more important then jacket visibility, thats why i have black jackets.

plus i have a large mellon the bright colors stand out more then a normal mellon........lol

well DOT is the same DOT for helmets and cars. there is another testing co, but they are not the gov't for cars. they have proven some cars are better then others even though they all pass DOT, the NAtionl insurance institute thats always on that dateline show.

i've seen/read about lesser helmets cracking, breaking in half, i'll keep on paying the $,

and i've read plenty on the i-net.
