agreed, but w/o outside testing it's all we have.

Real experimental evidence of any value is impossible to obtain privately unless you have a lot of money and time. Just buy the helmet with some certification (DOT or snell) that fits your needs and most importantly your head best.
back to my mercedes vs hyundai ( or dawoo, since hyundais have gotten better, albeit more exp. in the process)........rather be in a mercedes or dawoo in an accident, both are DOT approved.

DOT is a standard, most likely minimal standard. so do you want a lid the meets or exceeds these test/standards.

lol, he's going to get jacked. he cant possibly fit into even half the helmets. If it's real loose and he gets smacked hard enough it could do some real damage.

then again I dont think anybody's going to put their full weight into it anyways, so he shouldnt get hurt...sounds like it will be hilarious if nothing else! I'll donate the aspirin.

same w/ lids. IMO
you are wrong Mr X they are built the same only the outer panels make them different. Mercedes invented the designs and shared them with all car manufactures. They are are built with the same way for SAFETY

and if they are all the same, how come w/ the national insurance institute side impact testing, their are varying scores from poor to acceptable to good and so on?

to long to read, anyways #1 reason i pay for higher end helmet. lightness factor. all high end helmets weigh a few ounce lighter. not much maybe, but on a long days ride your neck will feel the pain faster on a cheaper/heavier helmet. the cheaper helmet may not be badly made but is just heavier.

as for the link of various helmet testing. i can look around, usually one posted everyyear, and i think even the scorpion exo700 failed the last one i read.

X is right on this one. There is definitely a difference in safety features amongst car manufacturers. Mechanical superiority, well you could argue that for ages. I think german cars are over-engineered, personally. Safety-wise however, you cannot beat M/B, BMW, Volvo. Look at the mercedes SMART car, the new M/B economy mini vehicle. That thing weighs around 1500 lbs and will take a hit from an excursion. try doing that in a miata....

but anyways, there is absolutely no evidence of this same hierarchy (high price = high safety) amongst helmets mainly because standardized testing is just not available except for the minimal test data from snell and DOT. I would avoid the obviously cheap helmets, like walmart BEL's, but a scorpion or HJC should do the job just as well as an Arai or Shoei. The most important thing will always be how the helmet fits your particular head shape...that's what you should base your buying decision on first, then evaluate what features you want and how much you're willing to spend.

yeah, it's a euro brand, prolly BSI rated, diff. then DOT/SNELL doesn't mean it's any better or worse. but unless it's DOT legal, you can get a ticket for it, though i doubt you will

i like sharks, cool w/ the center port, diff. not everybody has one. but there's not a place locally to try it on.......and w/ my large mellon.......lol
