Thumbs down WHAT THE __??

Caught this on another forum....

http://www.tonker.com/?nav=1&title=t...ntent/sidi.php

We are sorry to say, but we will not be carrying Sidi, Spidi, or Setup as of 2/15/06. The distributor MotoNation has contacted us and stated we are not allowed to offer coupons for Soldiers serving in the military. We are not allowed to offer coupons for Iraq War Vets. We are not allowed to offer coupons to police officers, or fire fighters. We believe these individuals have a right to a little better price because they put their life on the line every day for us. We know we are going to take a loss in business, but you have to draw the line some where. Motonation can be reached at:

motonation is the sole distributor for Sidi boots. they have created alot of bad blood among i-net vendors.

they have a price fix on their boots. and don't allow advertised lower prices then list. Tonker, could offer the boots for a lower price themselves w/o motonation "knowing" about it. but it'd be hard to verfiy employment of such people....soldiers/LEOs/firemen.....

So lemme get this right...a company that sells Sidi boots doesn't wanna take coupons or the people that MAKE Sidi boots doesn't want them. I was thinking of getting Sidi when I get some but I don't want them anymore if that's how they feel.

RacerX get his K and H mixed up again?

I am pretty fond of Alpinestar boots now... Maybe CMRA/AMA would have more pull on this matter? (Never seen a coupon though?) If the dealer say offered a Discount instead for a said individual after displaying an ID I would have no issues. SIDI should take notice and drop a swift kick in a well placed spot... (Looks like it's a MotoNation decision, Peoples Republic of California.)

O.K., let me help shed some light on this;
First off there is not a big margin on Sidi products, however some companies will try to sell them at $5.00 above cost. As a result, most shops won't carry them in stock because it doesn't pay, therefore it makes it hard to find a place to try them on.
There has been a growing amount of backlash by Mfrs. against internet companies "whoring out" sales in the last few years.

Arai started it 3-4 years ago and Shoei, Suomy, Sidi and Scorpion among others have followed suit, by enforcing a minimum advertised price.

In order to even become a vendor for these and other companies you HAVE to sign an agreement that you will follow their pricing guidelines.

I don't know the details but I'm betting that this i-net company got their hand slapped more than once for violating the policies and finally got their dealership yanked.
Sidi does not typically yank a dealership for just one violation, it typically starts with a warning letter and then progresses from there.

Probably what happened is this company was advertising the boots way low, Motonation cautioned them, they did some other stunt to get around it, they probably got slapped again, they came out with this "coupon" as a way to get around it, "if you're in the service, FD, PD" you get a "special" discount, nudge nudge, wink, wink.

As Ed stated, it's next to impossible to verify a persons service status, and to be honest the company probably doesn't care.
Now they're and moaning and trying to make Motonation look bad, because they don't want to adhere to the agreement that THEY signed.

I can't speak for what they have or haven't done for the services, but I will say that Motonation has been VERY supportive of club level racers, which is much more than can be said for many other mfrs.

I don't believe for one second that Motonation doesn't support people in the service, etc., just that they are enforcing a policy that they believe in and that the vendor agreed to.
It's their company and can set pricing as they see fit.
I think it's a chickenshit thing that this other company is trying to pull, by playing the "support the troops" card.
I looked around their site and I didn't notice them running any kind of special for service members on any of their other items, which leads me to believe that their motives are suspect.
My 2 cents.

I just thought it strange they specifically cited LEO's, Fire and Military. Yes, I can see how it would be difficult to verify employment - but not impossible. I think that for the most part they would be honest.

I think what Motonation / Sidi are saying is they don't allow ANY coupon BELOW the 10% off standard that the vendor agreed to, regardless of who you are / say you are.

I think Tonker is probably twisting Motonation / Sidi's words to serve their own means. As I said; I didn't notice them running any kind of special for service members on any of their other items, which leads me to believe that their motives are suspect.

It's nice to see perspective from another vendor who's had experience with them. Does clear things up somewhat. Thanks
