time-based thread lock?

Is there anyway to institute a time-based thread lock?

like if a thread has not been posted in for 30 or 60 days it gets locked?

would be particularly useful in the for sale section....

I could see the use of it in the for sale section as well.

In other sections not so much. Some threads remain useful and open for discussion for a while and then there are some that are really only valid for a short time.

There have been other examples and prob for sale is the only place it causes a real problem. But also could be used in the Events section...

I can't imagine we would ever implement something like this. It's pointless. If a thread needs to be locked a mod/admin will lock it.

and there is nothing wrong with bring back old threads if it is relevant.

We can't at people for not using search and then turn around and at them for bring back old threads.

I believe you can lock your own for sale thread. Seems like I did when i got rid of my stuff.

No they took that feature away when they redid the for sale section. Why they did I have no clue. Just making more work for the mods cause I report the post everytime I see one of my old for sale threads open.

A for sale thread from 6 months ago is not likely to be relevant.

why not?

We should at them for not using search AND for bringing back old threads.

What does locking a thread have to do with the search feature anyway?

No worries though apparently I was the only one annoyed by them so... time to raise some dead threads.

j/k I don't have time for that but if I was bored....

really??? who cares if someone bumps an old thread. Most of the time its funny as . and if its not its usually gone within a few minutes. I really see no need for this. This site has enough movement on it to sort out the irrevelant stuff. We dont need any more government...lol. we already cant say ****... .... *****... ect oops well apparently we can say ....lol

Likely, no, possible, yes. Several people put up things on here that stay listed for months before they sale. Bring back the ability to close a for sale thread ourselves and the mods will continue to clean up the rest of them and we will be good. No need for a time based auto lock. We have plenty of actual live human mods with the ability to make educated decisions as to lock/not lock a thread.

Maybe you missed my point.

People like to when someone makes a new thread asking the same questions that has been asked in countless other threads on the site (ie: chain cleaning). Stuff that just gets asked consistently over and over. So we tell them to search, this makes sense, keeps the site cleaner.

Some people also when someone posts in a old thread. There is nothing wrong with posting in a old thread when bringing relevant information to the topic, (ie: someone wants to contribute their method for cleaning the chain or whatever). Do I think bringing back a ton of old as threads for the of it is dumb, yes. But that's not what we are talking about here.

If we make old threads auto lock, people will create the same threads over and over again, when they should be using search.

+1 there... Maybe the OP should be able to close any thread?

I plan on bumping the OG thread every year, so I say NAY to auto-lock:

It's now a permanent institution to MH

members can lock their own threads in classifieds

but, no one does it, even when it was requested in big red bold print

Ah!! It's back! When did that happen? It was gone for quite some time, but I just checked and it's there now. Sweet. I can stop PMing mods to close my for sale threads.

The only thing else I think would be beneficial is the ability to edit the first post (including the title) for longer than the normal 5 mins. (Only for the classifieds section)

Yes, it can be done. Will MH do it? Likely not. IMO, it should be done in the classified forums. Lock anything that hasn't had a post in the past 6 months, IMO.
