Ninja 250 Gearing

I've been riding the heck out of our '09 Ninja 250. If you have one, either '08 or '09 you probably have noticed that 1st gear is virtually useless and the engine is wound up at freeway speeds. I did some searching on the 250 specific forums and found that many others have the same complaint and what they have done to correct it.

I made a call to Brandon at Motorcycles Unlimited and ordered a new 15 tooth front sprocket and a 43 tooth rear sprocket. Standard gearing is 14/45. What a difference it makes !!! I'm now running 70 mph indicated at 7400 rpms and 80 mph indicated at 8500 rpms. Much, much better with no noticeable loss of power and I weigh in at 235 lbs and my tank bag adds another 20 lbs. I'm sure the fuel mileage will improve too.

If I were 150 lbs. I would go with a 41 tooth rear.

Do you ride it at the track? If so, how do you like it?

I haven't taken it to the track...........yet. It's gonna be hellacious fun when I do. My straightline speeds will be less but I'm gonna pass me some bigger bikes in the corners.

did you have to get a speedo healer to keep mileage and speedo readings accurate?

No. The speedo works off a gear on the front wheel hub.

Bring it old man
Carl, did you check out Kawiforums.com?
Man, once the new 250R came out, the 250R section blew up over there.
Lots of threads about the 250R.

Yep. That's one of the places I've been lurking in to get my info.

This little bike is a hoot! I can't wait to get some free time so I can go do some back road riding on it. Solracer, look out. I'm coming for ya and your 500.
