HD Sportsters were right-side operated until 1972 or thereabouts. The big ones were left-side already, probably because of the suicide shift (always on the left).

As to conversion of a modern machine, I took a look at mine and I think I could easily run a bar, with a couple of brackets, to the other side. Relocation of the rear brake could be done the same way, or with a longer linkage running diagonally across the machine to the sprung arm. (Presuming a non-hydraulic rear.)

Doubt there's any kits (though you never know--manufacturers sometimes have setups for this sort of thing) but with some basic metal fab should be quite doable. One would want to chose the model carefully, though, since I can easily image configurations that would make it a much more difficult task.

Also, I doubt you'd want to sell a bike in such a state, though I don't know the law regarding such things.

I can make anything out of anything, I have two big bridgeport knee mils, 2 upright monster drill presses (one with bits bigger than your arm), 3 huge metal lathes, a huge gear hobber and shaper and 3 upright metal saws, 2 horizontal saws, 2 upright belt sanders, 6" and 4", and stick, mig, tig, aluminum ability blah blah blah point is, I can do a right side shifter conversion if needed.

he.he.he. My ride is a kawasaki. My brother dont have one but he wont ride a rice burner anyways. Only wants a harley .. He got a messed up left leg and cant shift like the regular way. Plus he is 6ft tall and 245?lbs. I dont think he will look good on a sportster. But he paints bikes evil!!! man he got this one cat that blazes on a airbrush! Since I am talking to knowledgeable peeps here, do the conquistador club still ride up north houston. (JOLLY RODGERS BAR on FM 525? I was friends with Lips- Justice a looong time ago.

what about a air shifter.. with a soleniod to acquate the shifter? put a button on the bike to shift gears after you pull in the clutch? just an idea and have a switch on it so that you can choose up shift or down shift.. so in all actuality youd have like two air shifters.. one for upshifts and one for down shifts.. (i wonder if i should patent this)lol
