Question Yamaha DT400 Clutch and gears

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here knows how smooth the clutch and gear system is on one of these old 78 DT400. I cant seem to get the bike past second. its almost like the clutch is too loose.

Are there any guidelines that yall can give me on this? This is supposed to be a 5 speed bike.

Thank you for your help
