WSBK: Successful operation for Laconi

Quote:
Regis Laconi is set to embark on the long road to recovery having successfully undergone a surgical operation to stabilise his fractured vertebrae.

Laconi was left in a serious condition after crashing during free practice at Kyalami, the Frenchman being taken to hospital where he was placed in an induced coma.

Brought out of his coma on Sunday, Laconi was operated on at Sunninghill Hospital in Sandton on the Monday by Dr Maurizio Zorio, where a metal plate was inserted to stabilise the two cervical vertebrae fractured in the accident.

In addition, a fragment of bone that had lodged close to the spinal cord was also removed and plastic surgery was carried out on the relevant area with a skin graft from the hip.

Although the operation was a lengthy one, Laconi has now been taken back to an intensive care unit to recover from the procedure. Currently sedated, Laconi is reported to be responding well to treatment and will be awoken within the next 24 hours in order for him to begin his full rehabilitation.

Currently, Laconi is set to remain in hospital until the end of the month, whereby he will be transferred back to a clinic in France via a specially equipped plane for continued recuperation.

Although there is no word on whether Laconi will return to racing in the near future, doctors are confident he will make a full recovery, barring any unforeseen complications.

Great news, but unfortunately, I think it is the end of his racing career.

That's good to hear.

Let's hope he continues to race, even though it's doubtful, in one form or another.
