Need some help with buying a used engine.

Im interested in buying a motor for my 2004 R6... i found someone that was selling a used 05 R6 motor but it had a cracked head. I asked for history on the motor and this is was the guy told me...

1. The motor was running before it was pulled out of the bike.

2. It has around 6000 miles and it was in a wreck. The head cracked where it mounts to the frame.

Would anyone consider buying this if the price was right? Can the crack be repaired somehow? If im not mistaken, I've seen post where riders had their chain snap and cracked the head. They repaired it and kept adding more miles to their engine.

Also, it comes with a harness. Wondering if that would work with my 04 model. I think the only thing different between the models are the throttle bodies.

I'll have to call Yamaha but the lower engine, I guess crank is gone on mine due to a blown piston I believe. The top half of my engine looks good from the outside. That's why i was wondering if I could just perform a swap.

Your head might bolt to that engine.

A lot of used engines are going for 12-1500

Plus I just checked Yamaha parts site and my cylinder head should easily match up to the other crankcase with no issue.

Los, IMO you're buying into a headache,
doesn't look like a 6K engine to me either and if it is they're hard miles!!

the heads are interchangeable, it is only the injector bodies that are different as you say
are you sure yours is undamaged?? why did the crank let go??

Im thinking low on oil and doing wheelies. I haven't opened mine up yet due to tools and not being able to lift the motor out. I just saw a crack on my crankcase and heard a loud grinding when the engine blew. Engaging the clutch helped with the grinding when I came to a halt. Oil spewed all over the back tire too.

if you don't have the tools and can't lift the old one out I think you may be biting off more than you can chew with this one, just my 2 cents!

it's doable but................................

You're probably right. The guy just said he had a sale pending, so I think that is signs already to just walk away.
