modeling and fiberglass work.

Well, I'm working on my bike (again) and need to make some sidepanels out of fiberglass, but since they will have some curved shapes (nothing radical) I need some backing to lay the glass on. I could use some kind of metal mesh and lay the glass on it, but what kind of mesh should I use? the other option, that i would prefer instead of the mesh is to use some kind of clay and shape it on the bike, that would give me more control.

The clay that car designer use would be just perfect, but is it commercially available? and if that's not possible, then plain modeling clay? in that case i would need to buy a few pounds of it, like in blocks or something like that.

Or someone has a better option?

I've seen people make speaker boxes out of fiber glass.

They have a cloth that they stretch over and then pour resin on it. After it hardens they sand it down to get it smooth.. It makes -loads of dust. You will need a mask and goggles.

you can also spray some of that insulation foam that expands when it hits the oxygen and shape it.

you can also make some homemade playdough with water and other household items. if you play with the ingdients the actual stuff is hard to shape and could be perfect.

can't use styrofoam-the f-glass resin will eat it up.

I would recommend making a mold from wax if you are doing a custom fairing. If you want a smooth finish right off the bat, try vacuum bagging the resin.

when i was fixing Kingshit's plastics, there were missing pieces of fiberglass. i ended up using some playdoe and it worked great. you just needa form it place it from behind, tape it up and make sure it's flat and even on the top surface. The fiberglass of course. I couldn't find any of the autograde clay they use, and didn't want to mess with mesh, so i did that. Turned out great.

well i would lay some aluminum foil and mas tape it down, fit the foil how you want the panel to look,(dont need to be exact) then spray a little wd-40,on the foil, then mix up some resin, and hardener, then get some kitty hair tear it in pieces about 4x4,then brush the foil with resin then lay some kitty hair, then resin, then kitty hair,be sure to get all the air pockets out,do one layer, let it cure then do another layer, until desired thickness, also dont mix the resin to hot,i usually do 12 drops of liquid hardener to each ounce or resin.depending on temperature.well let me know any more questions.if you have any.

yeah i did that... didn't work so well... ripped the thing off and did the playdo... maybe it'll work for someone with better luck lol... i just have bad luck lol.

And why you ask about the color of the doh lol...

Oh and lol at the styrofoam thing. That was a learning experience for me... I used it to hold the resin and later on it was all over the newspapers lol. I had to run to my dad's shop for some plastic containers.
