you might as well have it tested on an actual tester if its that close.

but you can also hook up a voltmeter to the bat. fully charged it should be around 12-13. (though i have seen plenty of batteries reading 11.xx and still work fine) start the bike. it should go up, usually to around 14 15. it should also increase when you rev.

yea it doesnt increase when i rev, that is the problem...can it be a bad batter and/or a bad charging system...or is there a definite way to tell

same thing as the last thread hook up your DMM (multi meter) to the battery. turn on the bike see if ur getting a charge. a good tool idk if u have one an amp clamp. that will tell u if the battery is recieving a charge frm the (charging system.)

1--charging system is not putting out enough or any charge
2--battery has enough voltage to turn on the bike. but shorted and not recieving a good charge.

Like Chris24 said, Its really simple with a volt meter hooked up, the bat should read around 12.5 engine off, and then go UP when started and rpm brought up slightly, If it stays the same or goes down then its the charging system NOT the battery, If its reading much below 12 just sitting there and then goes even lower when trying to start then the battery is weak, BUT could be weak from a bad charging system, or it could just be failing, hope this helps, btw U can buy a really cheap volt meter at wallyworld or any auto parts store

The battery only completes the power/ground circuit and holds a charge when the battery is off.

If it continues to not charge, go to the ac setting and check the voltage of the three wires from the stator to the rectifier. That will determine whether the stator is bad or the rectifier.

im going through this now....bike died on me yesterday while i was out riding. lucky for me i have a little brother that has the same bike as me so i pulled the rectifier off and hooked it up on his (i checked it with the multimeter as well) and that checked out.....battery checked out.....load tested the stator and there was my problem...pulled the side case off, and there was my problem. stator is all black and charred where the wire leads connect onto it. now i get to wait a week to ride
