Honda awarded Moto2 engine contract

Quote:
Honda has been named the exclusive engine supplier for the new Moto2 World Championship.

"After considering offers from various manufacturers, it has been decided that Honda will be the initial single engine supplier for the new Moto2 class. Their high level performance engine will be over 150hp," said an FIM statement.

It is not known which other manufacturers submitted a bid for the Moto2 contract.

The new 600cc four-stroke class will feature machines with original (prototype) chassis designs but identical engines.

The FIM has also confirmed that 2010 will be a transition year, with Moto2 four-strokes and 250GP two-strokes racing together.

“Next year only this [Moto2] category will also be open to the current 250cc motorcycles,” said the statement.

The original intention for Moto2 had been to use production motorcycle engines from various manufacturers to power the machines, but the move to a single engine supplier was subsequently announced to 'limit costs'.

The use of a single engine, providing it is sufficiently different from existing road bike powerplants, should help avoid conflict with the World Supersport Championship, which has exclusive rights to 600cc world championship production racing.

Honda has won the 600cc World Supersport Championship, with Ten Kate, since 2002 and it is rumoured that the Dutch tuning experts will help maintain the new engines.

Ten Kate told Crash.net earlier this year that it was 'interested' in Moto2.

The 250cc World Championship began in 1949.

It was also announced that MotoGP free practice and qualifying sessions will revert back to one hour, having been reduced to 45 minutes for the first three rounds of this year.
Hate to say I told you so

i hear what your saying, but imo itll make it more interesting. racing about skill and riders and not just who can more hp out of the turn.

imagine if baseball teams were all owned my bat manufacturers and each team only used their own bats, and louisville bats hit further then everyone elses...great...they made a great bat, but id rather see players play baseball instead of factories playing.

plus, imagine all the money the factories are going to stop dumping mindlessly into gp. if you buy a ss bike off the showroom, for 10k i wonder how much of that dough goes into some prototype piston ring, or a one off clutch plate. it might even make motorbike prices come down, and im all for that.

Grinchy & Chris, I see what you are saying but all factories have competitive engines at 600 cc. I stil think is BS IMO but there is not much I can do about it.

bottom line is the original concept was prototype chassis and a spec 6oocc four motor that was open to bids, honda put in the best bid of being able to supply and service spec motors that met the FIM needs, some of the other manufactures did not supply bids. Aprilla and ktm wanted to stay with 2stroke 250s- something none of the big 4 wanted no part of, as there is no street bike 2 stroke development going on and has not been in years, 2strokes are dirty and no country will have anything to do with them. the 'factory' competition will be from chassis builders and riders.

Incidently, the prototype moto2's already tested by good but not brilliant riders are already going quicker than 250GP lap record pace!!!!
Blusens Moto2 at Jerez as I recall.
