Air filter question?

My co-worker has a 1994 honda shadow vxl 600cc.... he took off his stock air filter and put on a smaller filter... now his bike won't start. He doesn't know what's wrong with it and I don't know what to tell him, other than, put the stock one back on... does anyone know what it could be??

LoL!! I'm sure he isn't that dumb... but I'll tell him for and giggles though. He's into the whole chopper look and removed a lot off that bike, to get it to look the way it does... he said he only took off the filter and plastic piping stuff... he never messed with the carbs or anything

i'd say put on the old filter and see if it cranks up again. if it does he should chunk the idea of swapping out air filters and leave well enough alone.

I cannot imagine changing the filter would possibly keep the bike from starting....there's something else going on. Perhaps he has it in gear and the kickstand down?

Well he does look a little squidish... maybe that's what he's doing? I'll have to get ahold of the picture he showed me, of him on his bike... it's

If you knew the guy, this picture would be even more funny....
Saul

I told him to reinstall the factory filter back on and see what happens, he'll be calling me tomorrow, to let me know how it turns out.

Does it crank? Can you smell fuel?

There are a few vacuum lines used by the carbs to regulate fuel from the tank. If they are disconnected it will have a hard time running but should still start.

Fuel, compression and spark makes boom. We can assume compression is good for now, fuel is mechanical on a carb system, the only thing that is electronically controlled is spark.

Yes it is possible to change only the air filter on some bikes and make it difficult to start.

The same bike will have problems starting if you remove the filter.

To not start at all maybe an extension of the same issue.

1994 so I am guessing it has Carbs.

Some carbs do not have the little gas squirters, or they maybe worn out.
On such bikes gas is drawn into the throat of the carb by Vacuum in the carb / air box (OK Venturi affect once running)

If the Air cleaner is removed or is highflow/ low resistance you may not generate sufficient vacuum in the intake to draw the fuel up into the carb.

I experianced similar on a 2003 1200 Suzuki Bandit.

Good Luck

I'm gonna guess some sort of vacuum leak if the lines don't fit the new breather you can usually plug em and it'll do just fine
