When someone talks about power to weight ratio, that's when HP per pound or pounds per hp begins to make sense. It will vary by bike or by bike/rider combination. In an earlier thread I showed that my power to weight ratio on my bike is 4.58 lbs per hp. I derived that number by taking the wet weight of my bike at an estimated 400 lbs plus my weight in full gear at 310 lbs and dividing it by an estimated rwhp of 155.

710/155 = 4.58 lbs per hp. As such, for every 4.58 lbs I drop off my body or my bike, it's the equivalent of picking up 1 hp.

Assume a 150 pound rider with 8 pounds of gear...

(400+158) / 155 = 3.6 lbs per hp

That's exactly right!! I don't care if your 80 pounds with your leathers on!! If you don't have the skills or the your still gonna get your spanked by someone who ways two times that (or three for me)!! But if you have the skills and your a fly weight it makes a huge difference. My big is why I had to build an SV superbike! Got tired of bustin my in the back section of TWS (Texas World Speedway) for a lead only to have some little 13 year old blow by me on the front straight!!

There is an advantage to more weight - more padding when you fall!! But seriously I agree with Max. YOu pretty well need to graph the mass (bike + you in leathers) against Hp. But then you're assuming that max hps are available all of the time. I would argue that torque is much more critical to accelerating a body out of a turn. The weight disadvantage can be minimized by carrying a lot of corner speed - momentum which is the key to riding light bikes fast.
