Question GSXR stock damper question??

The stock steering damper on my 06 gsxr600 obviously is cheap and non adjustable. I really don't want to spend $500 on an aftermarket right now so I was thinking about draining the oil in the stock and replacing it with some good name brand fork oil to stiffin it up a bit.

Anybody try this?

If so, what oil and weight did you use.

Its been done, it does help some. You'll need a heavy weight oil. I think 30 weight is popular, but I could be wrong....its been years since I've messed with a stock gixxer damper.

I was told by Wes this past weekend, that its not worth trying to change out the oil in the stock damper. Because if you break the rubber seal its basically toast!

exactly what he said! you can get a bracket pretty cheap through gpr and get brandts. that would be your cheapest way to go or get lucky on ebay!

I've done this twice, replaced it with 5 weight and it made a difference. Neither was in my bike though. 30 weight! Holy will I still be able to turn? lol

Your new bike has an electronic damper. you won't feel it as it doesn't start damping until you're moving.

watch that you dont have ANY play at beggining of stroke.
my buddy did it and he wound up with some play i did NOT like one bit.
another guy did it and turned out well.
keep it submerged in fluid the whole time,or as long as possible.
u dont want any air in there ....
use a zip lock bag with fluid in it as youy pump it to refill it...

LOL mixed emotions on this topic

As I said, we've done this to 2 gsxr600s and both feel WAY better. We added 5weight blueray fork oil and got the stock out of it with a saringe.

I was just wondering if anybody else tryed this, I'll be doing it to my gsxr soon to test it out on the track.
