knoppix is the gangster of recovery software, linux based stand alone software, your computer will boot on knoppix and not use the hd, you can change windows passwords partitions, and all of that stuff that windows doesnt want you to be able to do. If anyone wants a copy of it, I will upload an image to my server and you can download and burn a copy. pm me for a link

those are my choices.

I usually buy my own external case and put in a hdd. but you could always buy a premade one. although they cost like $100 more. usually in the $200-$400 range.

throw a budget out and size of hdd wanted/needed.
dono what brand it has in it... but it wasn't a hardware issue, it was an OS took a issue. I'm back up and posting on it now (and have all of my data thanks to The Floppy Wizard Computers on Gessner). We're off to buy an external HD soon... can you recommend brands for that? I've also been told to look for an "on/off" switch... any other good features?

if the drive is physicly bad, give drivesavers.com a call. there not local, but i've sent them burt (as in building fire) hard disks and got data back!! if the drive is still functional but the partitions are jacked up or what have you, i can recover the data, pm me for assistance

Funny you guys bring this up My hard drive at work crashed yesterday and we called in tec com and he got 95% of the program that I needed the most ..Whew was I every relieved. We use the Dell computers at work with sh*t drives by Maxtor..Western Digital all the way..It's what i runat home have 3 installed..Can't say much about the E-Machines either..Build your own ASUS mb great
