Try this first.

Remove the hard drive, then put it inside a plactic bag and close it and place in inside your freezer (top section) and leave it there for a few hours, then remove it and install it on your PC and get whatever data you need so you can trasnfer it to another HD.

It works many times

that's only for a physical head crash.... we just have a software whoopsie. if this was dos based I'd be a-ok but i can't get to a dos prompt. also, because it's proprietary i don't have an xp cd just a partition on the hd that i can restore w/ and i can only do the "destructive" restore for some reason

Actually if it's because the HD is heating up and failing it will work.
It will allow you to at least recover some files before it overheats again so you may have to do it several times.

If you can't see the HD in BIOS, try installing the hard drive in tandem with another PC set it to CS or Slave.

I know he's up at Oak Hill this weekend but try pinging Henry / FZ1 Moto or Jason / Moody.

Good Luck!

If it is because the OS took a on you. Then slaving it or doing a parallel install of the OS will allow you to recover your data. I guess this was not the Thinkpad? If it was you can you use the recovery disks to get to your files.

Never tried the freezer but I have had to firmly tap the hard drive on carpet to free up the arm. Not a long term solution though. I have some data recovery software as well if it comes down to needing that.

I have recovered many HD's..... I have an External USB/Firewire case I put the drive in, and access it through another PC..... pull all the files I want to save off of HD and reformat or replace, reinstall Windows then replace files.

I know your dilemna I use external HD's for all my back-ups and important files, nothing sucks like losing important stuff. Also check into a FTP to upload suff like those pics too in case this happens again.

Hope it all works out for y'all Ed.

now we've learned that emachines uses priopriatary hardware, and thats why our PC locked up.

we have to buy emachines ram $108 for 1gb vs $85 from newegg, we're also gonna add an external hard drive as well.

we found a place thats D/L the pics via linix, $60/hr , about 2hrs worth. oh well, we've learned our lesson.

For a software "whoopsie" as stated in the other thread, you would have been better off taking that 120 and picking up another HD and USB box, removing the old drive, replacing it with new drive, reimaging it with the eMachines recovery CD's and placing the old drive into the USB box and recover your images that way.

I mean in the end, you are gonna have to reimage the machine anyhow if you want it to be usable.

what brand was the emachine running.

1st choice. western digital, 3-5 year warranty. the enterprise edition are safer and more reliable. also only available online.

2nd choice. seagate, 5 year warranty

those are my choices.

I usually buy my own external case and put in a hdd. but you could always buy a premade one. although they cost like $100 more. usually in the $200-$400 range.

throw a budget out and size of hdd wanted/needed.
