ATF dog dies on duty

Perot said about 1:30 a.m. the unit was taking a break and the dog, a Labrador, was being put into the back of a truck when he suddenly bolted and went over the edge of a ramp.

The dog fell about 55 feet to the ground and was taken to a local veterinary clinic where he died. Perot said the dog, used for detecting explosives, may have seen a pigeon and instinct took over and he jumped at the bird.

"This is a highly trained animal but sometimes you can't train the instinct out of them,'' she said.

thats about like laughing if you watch one of your brothers get killed in iraq!

Lighten up folks, it's funny because the dog jumped off a cliff to get a bird. You wouldn't feel bad if the dog ate the bird would you?

a dog eating a bird and a family member dying are two totally different things.

Funny, they didn't mention anything about a break or a pigeon this morning...

If you were with a bomb sniffing dog and saw him haul and jump, would you follow?

One of my buddies used to be a K9 officer... he still has the dog and recently dropped a big amount of $$ to have a life saving surgery. Dogs are part of the family... one of the saddest days of my life is when I had to have my dog of almost 16 years put to sleep.

How do you know that wasn't the family pidgeon? And the only reason it is flapping today is because the big mean dog Wile E Coyote'd it off the cliff?

People own birds too, and love them like family.

This is a darwin matter in my opinion

that dog is basically a part of that officers family.

FYI. K9 dogs are treated as officers, if you injure 1 or shoot 1 , it would be the same charges for a person.

Look I'm not a dog hater, But you can't tell me you do not see the irony in a predatory animal meeting his demise trying to murder it's prey?

irony is one thing, laughing at a " family member " dying is no good.

just my opinion

The only reason we are having this discussion is because it's an officers dog, if this was some jack pit bull we wouldn't even be here.

People laugh at death all the time, how many of you have watched the darwin awards and laughed at some of the stupid stuff people died from? Those were REAL people, not some dog.

Yeah me too, except when it barks all night *note: last night*

But even though I do, I can still see a bit of irony in animal a dying while trying to kill animal b, because it couldn't fly like animal b can.

some people laugh at death as a means of releif, i have seen many people die, i deal with life and death every day im at work, and then some when im off of work, and sometimes yeah, we do joke about it, amongst ourselves. not in front of other people who may construe it as " making fun of " for people in my line of work, its a stress relief, you just have to think about it before you say it.
