just read that Spies had to park the Yamaha in the gravel towards the end of the 2nd period with a technical problem!!!

He came out in the third and set pole on his spare bike

how's that got to sit with Haga and co, they must be like

Ben Spies explains ‘spare bike’ Superpole
Ben Spies' hopes of continuing his perfect run of World Superbike pole positions looked in jeopardy when he was forced to park his number one Yamaha after a technical problem during Superpole 2 at Valencia on Saturday.

It meant that the American rookie went into the top eight shootout on his unfamiliar spare bike, but the change ended up being a blessing in disguise as the set-up of that machine turned out to be better than on his preferred R1.

“Yeah I was actually a little worried about [the bike change],” Spies said afterwards. “We had an okay second Superpole but coming in we had a problem with the bike and had to switch to the back-up bike.

“It had a different set-up on it, that I didn't get to try in free practice, so I was a little but worried going into the third Superpole.

“Luckily I think we found a little time with the change so I'm looking forward to trying it again in the morning [warm-up] and seeing if we can get a little more speed out of it.”

Spies set a record-breaking 1min 33.270sec lap on his back-up bike, placing the AMA champion a massive 0.685sec clear of nearest rival Regis Laconi (DFX Ducati) for a perfect third Superpole victory in a row.

Championship leader Noriyuki Haga, the only rider other than Spies to win a WSBK race this year courtesy of his season-opening victory at Phillip Island, qualified in third position, 0.812sec from Spies.

Haga's Ducati Xerox team-mate Michel Fabrizio will complete the front row, while Aprilia's Max Biaggi - who battled with Spies and Haga last time out in Qatar - suffered a disastrous Superpole.

The Roman, fastest in first qualifying and then second free practice, was eliminated in Superpole 1 and will start just 18th on the grid.

Spies on the other hand arrived at the final stage with both qualifiers to choose from if you believe everything you hear

The new formula is based on three sessions of 12 minutes each. The first two are ‘knock-out' format with the top 20 qualified riders whittled down to 16 and then 8.

The last 8 then fight out the final session for the front two rows on the grid. Each session is separated by a break of 7 minutes and all riders have two qualifying tyres at their disposal.

Hope that helps

Also riders have 2 sets of qualifying tires to run in a possible 3 superpoles. So, you have to be strategic about when to use your qualifiers. (or if your Spies, you make to the 3rd Superpole w/ both sets remaining...)

'Races are tomorrow' reminds defiant Haga
World Superbike championship leader Noriyuki Haga insists he isn't rattled by Ben Spies' massive Superpole advantage and remains confident of fighting for a double victory at Valencia on Sunday.

Haga won the first race of the 2009 season at Phillip Island, but rookie Spies has triumphed in the three races since - and is now just 10 points behind the Ducati Xerox rider heading into Sunday's third round.

Ahead of that encounter, Spies took a perfect third Superpole in a row by a massive 0.685secs from nearest rival Regis Laconi (DFX Ducati) on Saturday, with Haga 0.812sec behind the Texan for third on the grid.

“I'm very happy to be on the front row,” said Haga. “At the beginning of the weekend I found a good setting for the race and I've already decided on the tyre for the race. I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

“It doesn't matter about qualifying,” he repeated. “My priority is the races, to win twice on Sunday. We have a good package so I hope we can do that.”

Ducati Xerox team-mate Michel Fabrizio will complete the front row in fourth.

“I'm happy with today's result," said the Italian. "After the first two rounds in which I didn't do as well as I hope, I'm happy that we've got back on the right road here. I feel as comfortable as I did in winter testing during which I was going really well. We've got the race pace and tomorrow I hope we can be up front and fighting to get ahead of Yamaha.”
does he sound a little rattled to you????????

I wonder what Bayliss makes of the new boy??
