Educate me on scooters (vespa? alternatives?)

My dad is looking to buy a scooter just for some easy transportation, which neither one of us know anything about. All I know is Vespa's are expensive, but have no idea what other brands are out there. He is looking to spend $3k-4k OTD. Any recommendations for:

1. Scooter than gets 50mpg+
2. able to carry and 250lb. man
3. local dealer
4. warranty

Honda makes the metropolitan. Piaggio and Aprilia make scooters as well.

I had one 3 years ago and kick myself everyday for selling it. It's identical to the Vespa 150 Piaggio (the old school)

It's a 4 speed twist shifter (shift with left hand, super easy) and with me on it went 55mph. I paid $2800 OTD from Apollo Scooter. There cheap to maintain and extremely fun and comfortable to ride. I dont know the exact gas milage but I could go all week in galveston on 1 gallon.

Check out Apollo Scooter (downtown). There good people and won't rip you off

honda just came out with a new 150cc scooter.
I think it's like $4K or more though.
Or you can usually fine a Big Ruckus for that price or less which is 250cc.
The looks are subjective, but they are really user friendly.

if you're willnig to make a trip, af1 racing in New Braunfels has a good selection of Piaggio scooters (includes vespa and aprilia), and their prices are fair.

If he is willing to spend a little more.........
My dad bought a Suzuki Bergman (sp?) a few months back. Think it was a 250. I rode it home for him from across town. Took it on the freeway (45s) and frickin loved it. Smooth ride, great exceleration. I had it at about 100 mph and it still had more to give! All around fun ride. My pops is right at 250lbs. He rides it to work from Santa Fe to La Porte frequently and says he gets like 55 mpg.
Well designed scooter. Well built. Worth the money for sure. If he is wanting to have an automatic versus having to shift on a bike, it is worth it to get the bigger scooters

Yamaha has some 125s

Will do about 55ish mph. Will carry a 250lb man. MSRP just under $3k.

Vino 125 - http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/pr.../328/home.aspx

Zuma 125 - http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/pr...08/0/home.aspx

Or check out http://www.scootersmith.net as someone else mentioned. He's got some Genuine brand scooters (Rattler 110, Buddy, Stella) for about $3k MSRP.

Genuine Scooters are typically 2 stroke, loud and smoky compared to the 4 strokers
