Lane Splitting

What do y'all think about lane splitting?

If you don't know what it is:
Basically you'll be able to drive between the lanes if you're in traffic that's moving less than 20MPH. I'd like them to get the law passed. That way I don't have to sit in traffic while the idiots slam on their brakes behind me.

It was already shot down back in 02/05 but it's still in review.

Send an email to your State House Representitive (if you care enough) -

Find your state House Rep:
http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/fyi/fyi.htm

The bill:
79R517 JRJ-D
By: Griggs H.B. No. 1522
A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT

relating to the operation and movement of motorcycles during
periods of traffic congestion.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Section 545.060, Transportation Code, is amended
by amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (e) to read as
follows:
(a) An operator on a roadway divided into two or more
clearly marked lanes for traffic:
(1) shall drive as nearly as practical entirely within
a single lane, except as provided by Subsection (e); and
(2) may not move from the lane unless that movement can
be made safely.
(e) The operator of a motorcycle may operate the motorcycle
for a safe distance between lanes of traffic moving in the same
direction during periods of traffic congestion if the operator:
(1) is at least 21 years old;
(2) has successfully completed a motorcycle operator
training and safety course under Chapter 662;
(3) is covered by a health insurance plan providing
the operator with at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries
incurred as a result of an accident while operating a motorcycle;
and
(4) operates the motorcycle:
(A) at a speed not more than five miles per hour
over the speed of the other traffic;
(B) in traffic that is moving at a speed of 20
miles per hour or less; and
(C) in a location other than a school crossing
zone or other than a location where the posted speed limit is 20
miles per hour or less.

One more thing:
Some of us need to make sure and use spell checker before sending it.

i wish it would pass as well.

FYI it's also called filtering

and riding down the emergency lane is not lane splitting.

That figures. Gov takes forever to get anything done.

I think MC's should be able to pass on the HOV lane. I had to do that this morning ... passed like 6 cars following another bike. I noticed that his kickstand was 1/2 way down so I caught up with him to let him know. He pulled over and checked it then passed me up a few secs later. Was this anyone on MH?

i don't think so, it was "hitched" onto another bill, when that bill was ratified, that portion was taken out. they already have the verbage, they just need to get it approved.

same stipulations as no helmet, must have taken MSF and can prove it, or must have $10k in medical insurance to be "legal" to lanesplit.

That's fine with me. Maybe they could sell us the 5$ sticker to prove we meet all the reqs. Do you still need the sticker to go without a helmet?

The sticker is NOT required. It helps to have it since with the sticker, the LEO will assume you have either taken the MSF or meet the necessary insurance requirements. Otherwise - you would need to prove either one.

I like the sticker idea. One less 'reasonable cause' for them to pull you over. Where do I get one?

1) plain stupid to go w/o a lid.

2) you don't necesarrily have to have the sticker, you must be able to prove you took the MSF

3)not all officers know ALL the laws, so either wear a lid, have the sticker, cuz they may not know about the MSF exemption. and your not gonna win a roadside argument.

4) wear a lid.....simple solution. your in the highest % of rider deaths......stupidty has alot to do w/ it.......
