Texas, we have a problem - T.M.R.A. (Lane Sharing pt 2)

First and foremost... the 'next step' for those that wish to support/see SB 506 passes.

Quote:
The next step is for anyone interested to contact their State Senator and ask for support when the bill comes to the Senate floor. We do not know when that will be. Contact should be in person or by telephone or letter. The caller should always be courteous and respectful, and it's okay to talk to a staff person instead of the Senator (it's more likely, actually). Mention the bill number and a few points the caller thinks is important.

Steven Polunsky, Committee Director
Senate Transportation and Homeland Security
Now the Texas Motorycle Riders Association (TMRA) or http://www.tmra2.org/index.shtml 'officialy' state they would not oppose this as long as there are no ammendments or further restrictions.
A blog from someone who attended the hearing has the following however...

Quote:
At least 65+, probably 70+, he had a long haired mohawk and 'Liberty or Death' tattooed on his scalp just over his left ear. He was wearing a black leather moto vest with a "LAWMAKERS" emblem on the back. He sat holding his cane with one lonely grafted-looking digit that protruded from what remained of his of a right hand. With his portable oxygen tank at his feet, he was clearly full up on liberty and slated for the latter before long. I have to wonder if he still rides - I didn't make note of his left hand but his throttle hand would make wrangling a big Harley a challenge. I don't know if he was from the TMRA, but his less than cordial comments afterwards imply he was certainly with a lobby group of some sort.

"On the way back from one of the few seats available a grizzled mostly spent looking old biker muttered something in my direction to the effect of "you better have voted no."

Then the old grizzled mohawk guy came out and said "We control six votes in there and it isn't going to pass, I just came to see what you yuppies were going to say."

"Mohawk, repeating himself because he didn't get the kind of reaction he wanted, said "I didn't testify against it, I just wanted to see what you yuppies were going to say. We own six votes in there and we are going to defeat it again."
I don't KNOW if he was with TMRA or some other 'group', but he would seem to fit the part...and personaly I'm not real thrilled with that kinda of 'image' claiming to represent MY M/C interests.

I think it would be great, but I know it wouldn't take long for all the squids out there to ruin it for the rest of us...

i dont know how i feel about lane splitting. if traffic is sitting still like i the other month when it took 30 mins to go a mile (with a little bit of lane splitting!!!) then i would be for it. but guys that take advantage of it and are unsafe about it then i would be against it. i think its safe not to lane split for sure. im gonna follow the law in most cases and im not gonna make any kinda stupid move to put myself in harms way

that's why the law says you can't go over 5 mph of the rate of traffic & I believe also, no more then 20mph-25, correct Ulric? It doesn't mean it would be legal to haul on the freeway lane splitting all the way. You wouldn't be able to do it at a high rate of speed....
You pretty much hit it on the head. Traffic has to be doing 20mph or less and your limited to 5mph over the surrounding traffic.

Squids and retards should weed themselves out pretty darn quickly if it passed, and I'd imagone/hope they nailed the ones doing it on the freeway etc at normal speeds with some pretty serious tickets/charges.

I think this is the 2nd time this bill has come up, last time to be able to lane split, you had the same rules as the "no helmet" law

if you are using overheating an air cooled for the rational to split this make good sense.

Even if this does pass, I'll give it a few years for the cagers to hear about this.

I was thinking similar, but not years. Maybe months or weeks. If it gets passed, I think they should have a two-part readout in the traffic time signs on the side of the freeway. One readout saying "10 min to 288" as an example, and the other mentioning something about motorcycles

Thats retarded that they are going against it, i think they are going against it because most of the cruzer's and harley's are TOO BIG to lane split so they are hurt cuz if it was to pass they couldent do it anyways so they wanna ruin it for the rest...also good point about the helmet, i support it even more cu the helmet law part of it.

If it passes there needs to be a public education campaign.

Can y'all do me a favor? Please, pretty please... go email your senators. Now. Go let them know that you want them to vote FOR this bill. We have already gotten it farther than we ever have before, use your voice. Without speaking your piece, you let someone else do it for you. Right now, that voice is Sputnik - and, by the way, that is a REALLY old picture of him.

The blog about the hearing... http://texgs.blogspot.com/2009/03/st...ring-this.html
