Backfiring

Picked up a new(to me) 06 Kawasaki 1600. Has V&H pipes and a PCIII. It backfires every so often on decel or when revved when it's not under a load. Is it worth taking it somewhere for a custom map or should I be able to download a correct map for it? If it comes with preloaded maps is there a website that describes how to set it and which to use? Also, my buddy said when he's behind me and I get on it he can smell unburnt fuel pretty strong. Is the occassional backfire damaging at all or should I not worry about it? Thanks!

Could the AIS. Does it have something like the Yamaha system? Mine has a decel "pop" not quite a backfire.

+1 for decel pop. Are you just not accustomed to a twin?

Is this the emission line that runs into the top of the airbox?

Not too sure, still have a ton of reading to do on these bikes. Which bike do you have Joe? We should get together for a long cruise.

I've had a cruiser before and a couple big twins but never one this size, may just be that I am a noob to it but when it backfires/afterfires it is significantly loud. I would say it does it more under no-load revs than anything else.

Wouldn't be able to keep up on the Mean Streak if ur on the R1 though haha

Thanks for the tips people, maybe I can snag a vid on my camera and post it up tomorrow to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.

that's part of it, there should also be a small pump that feed air to the exhaust side of the cylinder head

If you are not having performance issues then it just needs to be jetted if it's carb or add a pc3 if it's fuel injection. If you have performance issues then it's probably misfire from foul plugs.

Runs awesome, fast for a 750 pound machine too! Fuel injected, has a PCIII already, but I've never used one of the things and from what I understand they aren't just plug and play.
