Texas Bill: SB 506 - Lane Splitting

Tomorrow the Texas Legislature is meeting in the morning to discuss Lane Splitting, and to pass/reject a bill that would make it legal to lane split when traffic is moving at 20mph or less. You will only be able to go 5mph faster than traffic (25mph), and you and any passengers must be wearing a helmet.

What are your thoughts on this?

I'm game for it. But down here we only have rush-halfanhour and traffic never stops moving. But in houston I would deffinitely want this. Not that it being legal changes much...

I'm against it, sorry to be the odd guy out here. The problems that will be comming from this are gonna be enormous, roadrage will increase, MVA(collision) will increase. there is also no real reason for it, if you get hot , too bad take a different route. if your bike gets hot, then take a different route, if you get hot too bad.

i'm not attending, and I am still not 100% certain how I feel about it.

I probably would not lane split because too many drivers around here are inconsiderate, and would probably try to jump out in front of you.

not probably - they will! i was trying to move out from in front this a** hole one day in afternoon traffic because he kept inching closer and closer to me until his bumber was actually touching my rear tire and when i moved up in between the car in front of me and the car next to him, the guy infront of me swung his door open and proceeded to yell obscenities at me

man, thats hard to believe.
You need to get a gun.
Someone taps me with a car, I'll consider that an act of aggression with intent to do harm and react accordingly.

it was in the dead of summer and i was dyyyyyyying from the heat and just wanted to get home so i just ended up juping over to the sidewalk and rode that all the way up to the beltway (was at Briarforst just west of Gessner), i know i was wrong for riding on the sidewalk, but it was the best i had at the time so i thought

<shrug>

I'm for it... figure first couple weeks/months may be rough. But then the rage heads and /squids will weed themselves out of the general population pretty quick.

After spending last week in California, and being able to lane split, I have to say, I am really for this. I used to live there, before I owned a bike, and on one freeway, during rush hour, a 20 mile commute took me about 1 - 1.5 hours with traffic at a dead stop minutes at a time. Last week, thanks to lane splitting, that same commute took about half an hour or so, with all the drivers happily making room for me to pass, even before I was close to them.

I also saw lane splitting being abused, guys lane splitting when traffic was already flowing at a good 60 mph speed, and cutting between cars to split on a different lane, etc.

So it goes both ways. I do like the fact that there is a hard coded speed limit of 20 mph, unlike Cali's law, which state at a safe speed, meaning if the officer thought it was not safe at the speed you where lane splitting, he could still give you a ticket.

---Edit---
I do have to say that I agree that 5 mph over the traffic flow is a reasonable speed for lane splitting, as anything faster, and there is really no time to react. Also, at faster traffic speed, cars only need small steering changes to create a big steering result, possibly smacking into you and dropping you off the bike.

I am for the increased public awareness that comes with laws like this.
They will be on TV, radio, and bill boards saying,"Look twice, save a life" like they do in Cali.

I am all for that!

Didn't know they do that. Yes that should be a must if this is passed. Just take some money of the top of a couple of bailouts and voila paid for!

i have NO PROB. w/ this bill , and i would lane split w/o hesitation.

also i'd rather have the option to lane split vs NOT as it currently is. this doesn't mean you have to.

RIDING THE EMERGENCY LANE IS NOT LANE SPLITTING
