I'm expecting big things from the Ape. Max's performance was stellar in the last race; considering the fact that it was the bike's first outing.

I'm also pulling for Ben; the man can ride!

Provisional front row in Qatar for Sofuoglu

Kenan Sofuoglu has put his Hannspree Ten Kate Honda CBR600RR on the provisional front row for round two of the 2009 World Supersport championship in Qatar. The Turkish rider, who won the first round race at Phillip Island, was third fastest in today’s opening qualifying session at the 5.38km Losail circuit just outside Doha.

Provisional pole position went to Cal Crutchlow, with Fabien Foret second fastest, as Sofuoglu’s team-mate, Andrew Pitt, worked on machine set-up for Saturday’s 18-lap race. The Australian set the tenth fastest time today.

Kenan Sofuoglu – P3, 2’02.634s
The track was still quite slippery this morning after all the sand that was blown about yesterday, but it was definitely better this afternoon. The front row was all we wanted from today’s qualifying. We’ll do a longer run during practice tomorrow and go for the front row again, which is important for the race here. It’s a fast track and you need to carry some corner speed with the Honda CBR600RR here, so I had to adapt my riding style a little bit today.

Andrew Pitt – P10, 2’03.282s
There’s really only one choice of tyre here, and I had a few moments with the alternative, so that decision has already been made for us. The settings that we used at Phillip Island weren’t really working that well today so we’ve got some work to do. We need a little more weight on the front to make the bike turn more easily, so we should be there or thereabouts tomorrow.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager
It’s the first day on quite a dirty track so we’re reasonably happy with progress so far. We have a very easy decision to make on race tyres and we’re expecting another hard battle in Saturday’s race so we’re preparing in the only way we know – through hard work.

Hoegee Suzuki Report

Barry Veneman

Since there was a lot of sand on the track during the free practice in the morning, there was no use to try to push to the limits. This meant for many team, and also for Hoegee Suzuki Team, they could be economical on the tyres. Barry Veneman used the morning session to compare several setups. "We made good use of this session and just didn't do crazy things" was the short but clear reaction of Barry, who finished 11th at 1.3 sec, from 'pole'.

For Shaun this first practice meant the first encounter with Losail Circuit. A circuit, as he acknowledges himself, that requires a different approach than his home circuit on Phillip Island. Shaun used this first session to familiarise with the track. By improving his lap times at the end of the practice several times significantly, he showed to be able to l earn quickly.

The 1st qualifying practice did not bring the team the positions hoped for. Long time Barry was competitive with changing positions between P5 and P10. At the end, the moment where many with new rubber go for their best lap, the bike gave some problems not bringing anymore what might be expected. Although he set his best lap, he had to give in some places, finishing the day at 15th overall. The distance with provisional pole however was just 0.9 sec. illustrating how close and competitive the field is.

Barry Veneman: "Pity we could not really use the last laps to substantially improve. Nevertheless I managed to quite reduce the gap with pole. Of course P15 is not the right place for me, however the gaps are smaller than in qualifying on Phillip Island, where this track is much longer. We will now analyse what happened at the end and go for it tomorrow again."

Shaun Geronimi

Shaun Geronimi also had a better result in mind for QP1 than the provisional P30. Shaun: "It was difficult this afternoon for me to get the right feeling with the setup, that you need to set a good qualifying. Nevertheless I went much faster than this morning and I improve my best lap time with more than a second the last time I went out. We now go to work with the data to disclose the improvements we'll make tomorrow.

Marc Hoegee about the first day: "Usefull day, we gathered a lot of information to work with. A large group of riders are very close, making this class so interesting and fun Therefore the positions for Barry today don't mean too much to me . I rather look at the gaps between the riders and then I say we are competing. It's all about Saturday and that's where we focus on. Shaun picked up the new circuit rather quickly. He wants and can do much better. It wasn't easy for him today, but this 2nd round isn't over yet. We look forward to tomorrow and eventually race day."

Parkalgar Honda happy with first qualifying

Parkalgar Honda’s pairing of Eugene Laverty and Miguel Praia put in a solid performance during first qualifying for round two of the World Supersport Championship at Losail in Qatar, with Laverty grabbing seventh and Praia finishing in fourteenth position.

Both riders vastly improved their lap times from free practice and have a direction in which to go for tomorrow’s second qualifying where they are hoping to secure front-row starts. Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow took provisional pole position with a time of 2min 2.634secs. The World Supersport race starts at 11:25 CET on Saturday 14th March.

Eugene: “The session finished well as I am seventh and, provisionally, on the second row of the grid. I’m happy with how things are progressing as we have been working through different tyre options. I started out on a hard tyre and then went for the softer one which was an improvement. I took a big chunk off my lap time from free practice this morning and I’ve dropped my time by around three seconds, so we are definitely getting there. We have a few changes to make to the front end of my Parkalgar Honda and I know once we get that how I want it I will feel even more confident than I do at the moment. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Miguel: “All of the session I was pretty competitive and I stayed near the front for a long time, it was only at the end that I dropped my position. We were working on adjusting the bike for the race and I put in a lot of fast, consistent laps at a good pace. My Parkalgar Honda is fast and I know I can run race distance. Tomorrow we will concentrate on lap times. I’m very happy with the session, my position of fourteenth isn’t so good but I will work on that tomorrow.”

Simon Buckmaster, Team Manager Parkalgar Honda: ”That session went well for us. Eugene is just 0.48secs off pole, we are just chipping away at the lap times and we are looking in good shape for the race. Miguel is just 0.7secs off the pace and I know he will improve tomorrow. This circuit improves on the second day and we have a few changes to try so we will be improving too. We will be aiming for the front row tomorrow and I think we are in good shape.”

Thursday Mar 12 2009Round 2 - Qatar

A LESS THAN EASY FIRST DAY FOR THE DUCATI XEROX TEAM AT LOSAIL

Losail (Qatar), Thursday 12th February: the Ducati Xerox Team faced hot and humid conditions today at the International Circuit of Losail with track temperatures in the high thirties during the afternoon’s first qualifying session.

This meant that Ducati Xerox man Noriyuki Haga, riding high on the back of his win at Phillip Island two weeks ago, and team-mate Michel Fabrizio both experienced a lack of grip, especially at the rear, which has meant that they have been working with their teams to find the best compromise regarding the set-up. Before the end of today Michel had registered the eighth fastest time and Noriyuki the eleventh fastest lap.

With the exception of two very fast times registered this afternoon by Yamaha rider Ben Spies and Honda’s Jonathan Rea, lap times were extremely close with seventeen riders lapping within a second of each other. Temperatures are set to rise even higher during the next two days, making for exciting racing on Saturday.

Michel Fabrizio 2m00.1s
“It feels like we lost his morning’s session as we completed very few laps so have had to make up for that this afternoon during qualifying, and haven’t had time to make the progress we hoped for. If we had gone straight out this morning without problems we would surely have done better than we did this afternoon. I have had some problems with grip and we need to see which tyres can last race distance but all in all, I’m reasonably confident for now and we know what we need to try tomorrow in second qualifying.”

Noriyuki Haga 2m00.2s
“Today was a strange day for me. We tried a different rear suspension setting to that used in Australia but the grip did not improve as we expected it to. Anyway the feeling I have with the 1198 is good and tomorrow we really just need to resolve the fact that I’m lacking rear grip. I will speak with my technicians again to decide how we will proceed tomorrow, we need to find a new way forward. There were some fast times recorded today so I need to pick up my pace tomorrow.”

First strike for Spies (Yamaha) in Qatar

Update: March 12, 2009, 16.00 PM ET

Ben Spies (Yamaha) set the quickest time on the opening day of qualifying action at the Losail circuit in Qatar. The three-times AMA Superbike champion - and race 2 winner at Phillip Island - dominated qualifying, ending the one-hour session with a time of 1 minute 58.886 seconds, eight-tenths of a second off the best time set by Troy Corser (Yamaha) last year.

"Today went pretty good, the result will be more important Saturday but every time I come to the track with Yamaha the bike is getting better and it's already such a fun bike to ride" declared Spies. "The team's working really good, but there are so many people that are fast out there that if you have just an OK session you end up behind. It's going to be a tough year, but we're clicking off session by session and we'll see where we're going to end up."

2009 WSB Qatar - Doha/Losail
Date: 12 March 2009

Yamaha set the pace on day one at Qatar

The Yamaha World Superbike Team riders answered any questions raised about their ability to learn new tracks quickly on their first day of qualifying at the Qatar circuit. Three-time AMA champion Ben Spies finished the day fastest of all Superbike riders, with an impressive time of 1”58.886. Spies’ team-mate, Young British star Tom Sykes also found his way around the dusty, sand-swept track quickly, spending most of the session lapping in the top three. His decision to hold back on fresh tires at the end of the session dropped him to 12th on the grid with a time of 2”00.283.

Both Spies and Sykes are new to the Qatar circuit in Losail, but have proved with their first day’s qualifying, and supported by their results at Phillip Island that they are not daunted by the challenge of new circuits and can be quick straight out of the box. The all-new 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 is also proving to be an extremely competitive bike, taking the young riders to the front of the pack at the beginning of the season.

In contrast to other race rounds, the qualifying will take place tomorrow and the races on Saturday, the WSB lights going off at 10.00 and 13.30 CET and the WSS race at 11.25 CET.

Ben Spies, Yamaha World Superbike Team
“The track has been great for my first day here and the team have been working great as always, we’re continuing to make the bike better and better, hopefully we can get even faster for the race! We can’t forget there are many fast guys out here and I’m sure they’re doing their homework too.”

Tom Sykes, Yamaha World Superbike Team
“I took it a little bit steady today, we’ve been working hard and trying race tires in preparation for Saturday. All in all were reasonably happy and it’s left us a lot of tires to play with. Straight away I was in the top three in the session, I know I can run fairly consistently with the top guys, so tomorrow we’re going to make some small changes to the bike and improve the set up. Australia didn’t really happen in qualifying for me which made it harder in the race so I’m looking for a better grid position for Saturday.”

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha World Superbike Team Manager “The first practice and qualifying session went very well for the team today. Both Ben and Tom were very fast and I was pleased with how quickly they learnt the circuit. Tom decided to only use one set of tires this afternoon and was in the top five until fifteen minutes to the end when most of the riders changed tires. Ben was again very quick, adapting well to the new circuit and putting in an impressive qualifying time. We have more work to do tomorrow, but are pleased with the day.”

I don't know. It has the correct date on the pic, but possibly mislabeled. *Losail* in the tag, so possibly snuck in.

I apologize if it is misleading.

No need tiatool.

I just looked back at some Australian images and he was in those colours for that round too

Just curious, that's all
