Im not reading all through this but you dont need full leathers anyway, a 2 piece is allowed. Not best for the fast riders but they allow it.

From El Paso to S.A. the posted speed limit during the day is 80mph. I'm not arguing Ryan, just stirring the pot. Kettle.

80 is a guestimate, it was probably more around 65, which was probably still over the speed limit. I could have avoided it easier by going the speed limit, you're right about that, but MOST (not all) don't go the speed limit on their bikes, and by doing so have to do emergency maneuvers to avoid hitting cars. I don't necessarily go to TD's to improve my street riding since I don't do much of that, I just go there to have fun

I'm going to do corner work because I'm in college and can't really fit track days into my budget.. insurance, bills, groceries, oil changes, tires and all that really add up when you don't have a job 1/2 on the year....

But this summer I will deff. have the money to do some!

Staying on topic.

So I have heard...

1. money (pretty much got that one covered)
2. additional maintenance (what maintenance? We are talking 1 day)
3. Tires (if they arent good enough for a track day, you need new ones neway)
4. Stretched biked (valid IMO)
5. My bike is too small (Navigator is FOS! dude has 10 bikes!) and there is a track for every bike. Except maybe a crf50.
6. Track Days wont make me a safer street rider (whaaaaaaaa? huh? false!)
7. I'm a . (i didnt say that!)
8. I work (made up by pyro - there are weekday events PLUS holiday events)
9. I dont want to (ok)
10 I dont wanna crash (you wont, if you ride within your limits like you do on the streets)

Obviously the answer is to slow down. Just like abstinence is the answer to pregnancy and most STD's. Does this mean we dont sell condoms? Peeps are going to have , may as well offer a realistic tool.

I didn't ride track for 10 years cause of the cost of leathers, boots, good gloves, and a snell certified helmet. All that has come way down in the past 20 years and the ridership at these events has gone up 10 fold.

Offering gear to a track virgin may make the difference between participation and sitting it out for even years and years. And we all know once someone has been on track, money seems to just find it's way into the track riding budget.

I probably passed on buying leathers and gear for 5 years while buying new streetbikes, used dirtbikes....it's hard to make it a priority. Until you feel the rush. What made me finally do it? A Sunday Morning Ride to Texas World Speedway with a parade lap for all spectators. I was hooked and started with TMGP not long after.

So I pose a new question: What keeps those of us who have been to the track before from continuing to go and support our site sponsors?

For me, budget is no longer a constraint. Now it's time and spousal support of the activities. It's much easier to convince the family to load dirtbikes in the truck and head to the dirt track for a 2 hour fix versus losing me for an entire day to get my selfish fix in. I've sold all my streetbikes except my SV650 for the same reasons. I never, ever rode them.

Shameless plug.

Seriously though, is that new? I paid 100.00 plus in June of last year. Wish I would have known.

Riding a 250 will not be an issue. You'll be able to run just fine with anyone in Novice, regardless of what they ride. A 250 will help your confidence and you'll get more satisfaction than if you show up on a 1000 and never really get to open it up. I've passed a few decently ridden 1000's on my 250 and it made me smile a huge smile every time.

At GSS the power difference between a 1000 and a 250 is almost negligable. it's all about turning, braking, and learning the track. That is how the guys run 65cc minibikes on the same session as intermediates. They would be absolutely killing the novices, even with only 65-70 MPH top ends.

MSRH you'll see more difference in straight away speed. 135 for the 1000's versus top speed on the ninja, maybe 95. In novice, probably no one gets over 100 until late in the day.

TWS (Texas World Speedway) is where the speed may be an issue. 1000's will be hitting maybe 140 for the more seasoned novices. You'll need to run your own line off the race line on the main straight to stay out of the faster bikes way.

Regardless, it's not a big deal anywhere. A 250, well ridden, will do just fine anywhere.

And I assume your schedule is why you visited Eagles Canyon, with 3 tracks within 80 miles of Houston and 2 within 20 of you in Kemah?

BUT I don't use those as excuses not to do it, I still want/plan to do a track day when I can get out there
I am the exact same way. I don't have the cash to drop on the track day, the transportation, and the boarding, etc. Second, I rarely have a free weekend. If I cornerwork for credit, that means I have to take 2 weekends to do the trackday. My wife has even offered to cornerwork with me to help me gain credits... we just haven't had the time to do so since we have a ton of other /hobbies going on as well. *shrug*

One day I'll get out there. I have everything (I think) that I need except a ride to/from.

At the same time... (some may feel this is a dumb statement, but it's my opinion) I don't think I "have" to do one to be better on the streets... since I don't ride like a jackass on the streets. The way I ride, I could ride a cruiser as easily as I could a sportbike. I rarely speed, I don't weave in and out of cars, and I ride very defensively, always watching everyone around me. Some will ask why I chose a sportbike then instead of a cruiser... I answer b/c I prefer sportbikes to cruisers for the abilities, handling, and so I CAN do a trackday in the future when I ever get around to it.

*shrug*

Either way, whether these are considered "excuses" (I think of them as REASONS) or not, it's a good question and a good thread.
