I am pretty sure the bike created the larger of the two gaps, while he the other. He did have a back protecter on...thank goodness.

I've hung out with the guy who wrecked before. Does not seem like a rash guy. I'm guessing it was road conditions, a mistake, or just inexperience. I don't think he would be doing something stupid. Besides he was doing 65 when he wrecked from accounts i've heard so he probably just had a case of real bad luck. Lucky to be alive by the thickness of that fence and the damge the bike caused it. If he had hit it first it might have been a difference story. If there is enough force to completely rip off the metal handle bars of a bike imagine what it can do to the skin, bones, tendons and flesh of ones arms.
