thinking about a project

ok, don't know how many of you cruiser guys have ever heard of Johnny Pag, but his son JR has a few different bikes he's building in China. he's handling quality control up himself, so we've seen surprisingly few issues considering they're $4500 bikes new.

http://johnnypag.com/

anyway, he's got a new bike coming out called a "barhog". meant to be kind of a pro-street/bobber type design, but unfortunately just a 300cc right now. it's been a pretty reliable engine, since it's basically just a bored out honda rebel clone.

indexphp?actiondlattachtopic100130attach13674image

looks pretty bare inside that frame with that tiny engine... guess that's what happens when you have a full-size frame w/ tiny engine.

anyway, what i'm thinking is getting one of these and swapping in a yamaha xs650/750 or honda cb550/650/750 engine or something similar. JR's been saying for years that he's working on a new 800cc engine that will be designed to be a bolt-in swap for his current bikes, and it seems that he's been hinting that the frames were designed for this all along.

so i guess my question is, how hard do you guys think that swap would be? seems as simple as fabbing up some engine mounts and having them welded to the frame...

I think it would be fairly easy. That won't sell me just rollers. lol. I had plans to do the same thing. Even just throwing in a 250v-twin better exhaust pipes, loose the water cooled. I think it would look pretty cool. Something like this.

Honestly though, for the price of the barhog if your gonna throw a 650 in it, your probably better off finding a old xs650 or something and hard tailing it and customize it the way you want it and still only have the barhog cost into it.

i've had a hard time finding decent xs650s, but i saw this xs750 and thought the triple would make a wicked looking chopper...

Yeah won't find $hit around here for xs650's I have been looking for months. If you do they want to much. I'm looking for a 1979 xs650 project to do in the future. The Rhino's suck from what I hear.

buddy of mine builds 750cc triumph engines in tampa...i'll give him a call & see what 100hp costs...

other than aligning everything & ignition wiring you'd have to fab some pipes (if the frame can handle the power)

that would be awesome. also get a name and number if you will. i know quite a few guys with the pag spyder that are looking for a swap and have discussed the triumph 750 in the past. that would be good info for them.

i'm ready for something new, and this isn't exactly practical the way i've got it setup right now... now if i can get a fender i like for the rear and get some mounting tabs welded onto the swing arm, it might be worth keeping.

+1. Bear in mind also, that you'll prolly be beefing the suspension and frame throughout to make up for the added weight. Not saying it's low quality, but it just won't be designed and tested for the 650cc. You'll be way into it - $$$$ - before you can tell if it's worth it. For the $4k you should be able to get a better starter frame without an engine.

tired of gettin your azz wet in the rain. that is the down side of a bob. what about a hugger, if you can divert the water in a new direction, you might not need a complete fender, just a suggestion. as far as the new creature goes, i like the triumph 750 idea is ballz, and i agree with hardknocks, if the bike isnt what you want and you are overpaying for a complete bike, and then gonna do an engine swap, you are almost better off finding a roller and building what you want. and just so you know, im goin to SPI on spring break and going near Pittsburg in july if you find anything out of town and need someone to haul it back
