group riders W/iphones

In the past with our v-max group rallies, we have 3 a year with between 20 and 30 bikes.
we always have a faster group and a slower group. The faster group gets to a turn and waits for the slower group to catch up. In the past we have had several incidents where we are sitting waiting, sometimes for several minutes, at times they have just got behind, but several times we have had someone wreck, so the faster group is sitting waiting, not knowing what the delay is.
After some time u then turn around to see what has happend to then pass them coming towards you,
This is a new program for those with a 3g phone, (iphone) where u sign up for it to your phone then any others in your group with the same program can see where the others are and if they are moving.
say u are stopped, look at your phone and can see that the drag rider with this program has stopped and is not moving, so u can then turn back to check out the problem, or u can see that they are still moving. see what i mean?
Another reason i was looking for something like this was i was gonna have to be in college station for fire school on the friday that our group was leaving for bandera. I wanted to be able to locate where the group was and try to meet them along the way.
thoughts?

I have read about this applet and think it's pretty cool especially if u r looking for the slow riders and what not. But how is it gonna respond way out in bandera where there is no 3g network. Might be more of a hassle if it's to slow

will be interesting when it comes out. there are some places out in the sticks where there is less than 3g service, there is NO SERVICE. wouldn't do much good. also how often does this thing update? can't be too often or you would have one of a drained battery.

It works fairly well on edge to I have it. bandera is now close enough to San antonio that it's better than it use to be

Says 5 hours of battery life while running.

You can set update interval to whatever you want, appears default is 30 secs. Does show speed.

Will be a pain in the though cause the person won't be able to pull it up in Google Maps on their phone, they will have to do it via web browser.

As of last Oct there was no service on 336, about 10 mile N of Leakey.....

I've been thinking about carrying my little VHF radios on group rides, one for the leader and one for the sweeper... they have a couple mile range. At least you could get ahold of someone quick if they are stopped

Exchanging phone numbers is ALWAYS a good idea anyhow.
