Gulf Freeway HOV - new home of Yankees?

Came in on the Gulf Freeway HOV this morning. At the downtown exit, I see two motocops inspecting cars and waiving people over. No cars were stopped, but there were 2 Road Kings, 3 half-civics and a Virago waiting to chat with the officers.

None of them were wearing helmets, although one Honda rider had a ball cap on, seems kinda unfair that he went to all that effort and was stopped anyway.

Not happy to see them getting tickets, the RK I rode in with was pretty cool, but I hope one or two of them learned something this morning...

Did I miss something? Last time I checked (about 2 min ago) you don’t have to wear a helmet in Texas if you’re over 21 took the MSF and / or have health insurance that will cover you if you crack your nut.

Doesn't make it smart. And you can't just ride without one, you have to provide proof that you meet the requirements and be issued a sticker. If you don't have the sticker you can show proof to the judge and pay small fine + court costs.

So they’re pulling people over for not being smart? Holey shiet, Gridlock!
And that sticker, not a requirement under the law. But without it you might get pulled over and checked.
Maybe even ticketed if the cop feels like it or doesn’t know the law but it can be dismissed in court at no cost.

My point was that it seems odd to me the cops would be pulling people over for that when most people who ride without helmets are doing it legally.

I assume that's what they're up to, and I agree there are other - possibly more productive - things the officers could be doing. But it was nice to ride in with a bunch of cruisers and be the only one that wasn't stopped. Schadenfreude, if you will.

Helmet exemption sticker, not MSF.

Well itís an assumption, but I donít think itís huge. Of those I see lidless, most are clearly over 21. The assumption then is that they have health insurance or took the MSF course. Again most of the lidless riders I see are on 20k+ bikes (Harleys and Wangs) and I assume that a lot of them have health insurance.

According to the law, the officer is supposed to assume that you have the requirements even if you don't have the sticker. This doesn't mean he can't pull you over to check for them. If you have the sticker he can't stop you for that reason.

How does anyone know that the bikes were pulled over for this reason? Maybe they were speeding or passing cars.

I know 'cuz I rode 15 miles on the HOV in staggered formation with a helmetless guy on a road king and we we came over the hill at 8 mph to roll up to the officers at the HOV exit, a cop pointed at his head and then pointed at the cruiser and directed him to the side, then nodded at me and waved me past. None of the guys who were held up was wearing a helmet, neither myself nor the RK I was with were speeding or passing cars, and the officer could not have seen tags or inspection stickers from the front of the bike.

I am assuming, however, that the other drivers were pulled over for the same reason and that none of them whipped out their dicks, flipped the bird, spit or otherwise provoked the officers.
