Exhaust pipe or no exhaust pipe?

I wrecked my bike about a month and a half ago and my buddy and I were taking it apart to see the extent of the damage. So I took off the muffler, a Yoshi slip on and it sounded amazing with out it. But I was wondering, is it illegal to ride with no exhaust pipe? Because if it is I most likely wont do it, and will the bike run the same without the exhaust pipe?. One of my buddies said that it needed some back pressure on the exhaust, Im not too sure what he meant, someone help

You will destroy the ozone layer. I'm not a mechanic but I think a muffler also has some sort of effect on performance.

Believe me, I'm all about loud pipes ... that sound good!!!! But everytime I hear a bike, or car, without muffler(s), I just want to "earmuff" myself and punch the rider/driver!!!!

It sounds terrible, you run the (slight) risk of burning valves, and you will lose a noticable amount of power.

even with a power commander you'll still lose power because of the reduction in back pressure.

I'm in agreement with those that think it will sound like !!!! Save your hearing and run a muffler please.

I did leave it on, I took it off just to see what it souded like and I just took it out for a spin around my neighborhood. Thats why I was asking you guys because I didnt know if it was good or bad. So I put it back on when I took it out on the street because I didnt know if it was illegal or not and I didnt feel like gettting pulled over. But knowing that its actually bad to ride without it, Ill just leave it on till I get another one. Thanks guys

slip ons are cheap these days. . .should be easy to find a "closeout" pipe for your bike IMO.

If you just want loud, maybe get a D&D and shorty it.

Or just shorty the one you have now.
