Am I low-ballin' here?

Just thought I'd get you guy's opinion on my quest to buy an 08 Matte Black Speed Triple.

There's an 08 Matte black with 1200 miles on it (supposed to be immaculate) that has triumph bar-ends, Arrow titanium dual slip-ons with a matching tune, and CF tank guard(s) and genuine Triumph bar-end mirrors.

A guy unsuccessfully tried to get rid of it on CL for 9300 and now it's at a local dealer.

I give the dealer a call and asked for pics and a price, and he stated that he'd provide me the pics soon and was trying to sell it for $9200. I called two hours later (after no pics arrived in my email....he said he didn't have a camera anywhere on the premises) and I jokingly asked him for my pics and told him I'd give him 8500 (suggested asking price by the previous owner after speaking to him via email) sight unseen. The reason I low-balled him a bit is because I'll need to allocate around $400 to get it shipped to West TX.

Am I a total d-bag for low-balling him a bit? The guy seemed kind of perturbed and said he'd try to sell it locally and expected to have it gone in a few days. I know...typical salesman talk. He seemed in a rush to get off the phone after I threw out that number. It seems like a really sweet deal with the add-ons (mods that I'd do anyway). Should I wait a few days and call back offering him $9k? I'm kind of a noob at negotiating with salesmen. I'll have to have it shipped, so I know he'll have to incur a hassle of dealing with the shipper and he won't get any kick-back from maintenance obviously. Should I just offer him the full asking price?

I really want a matte black. There's glossy's everywhere in South TX but no matte ones. A new 09 starts at 11.2k + etc. etc.

My current plan is to call back in a few days and ask for the store manager and see if he'll take 88 or 8900. Thoughts?

I low ball all the time. I got cash, if they want it they can have it. If not, well, they can keep trying to get what they're asking.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Why don't you go straight to the owner? If he said he would take 8500 before & still hasn't sold it he will probably still take the 8500?? The dealer is just trying to put some money in his pocket...He doesn't care if the bike sits there for 5 months.

Hehe. Cash really isn't the issue. It's the principle of the matter.

I'm willing to depart with 9k for the machine, but I don't want the dealer to know that.

What do you mean the dealer doesn't care if it sits there for 5 months? Of course he does. Times are tough for stealerships and I'm sure they'd like to be selling as many bikes as they can right now since they're considered a novelty in our current economic crisis.

The bike is err...kind of in NM. I'd have is shipped about 200-300 miles to West TX, which will put me out another 300-400. I'm in the Middle East right now...gotta work this out over the phone.

Any tips for negotiating? I guess I'm not so savvy as I thought.

Yeah but if you offered 8500...Most likely if he wanted to move it he could have come back with a counter offer. 92? 9? Anything. He wants to get the 95 and thats it...or let it sit.

I'll be home in a month, so I hope to have it waiting on me. I'm not in the military; I'm an engineer.

The original owner was trying to sell it on CL for upper 9's, then went down to 9.5, then finally down to 9.3 with a few warning expletives to evade low-ballers. So, next thing I know, guy doesn't have it any more and now the dealer wants $9200. I'm guessing the dealer bought it from the guy for around 8k.

Any tips on being persuasive enough to massage the price down?

I'm guessing the guy owed some money on it and thought he could save his credit by asking for what he owed on it. Instead the dealer repoed the bike and now there it sits. I see too much of that with people on craigslist. They owe 15,000 on a $7,000 bike because of bad financing, taxes rolled into the loan etc and then won't budge on their price because they think what they owe is market price.

Have you made the 9k OTD offer to the dealer?

Just be sure the salesman has your number. He'll want a nice lunch one day and call you to negotiate. If you keep contacting them, they'll stand firm.

As long as I can live with the thought of the bike going to someone else, I will low ball like a geriatric dwarf.

I have an overseas number, so I doubt he'll be calling it anytime soon. Yeah, I don't want to contact them too much or they'll think I'm desperate for it or something.

is this the bike?

http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/1028870904.html

its at polaris west in 'old katy'. not a fan of that place, and if you do a search for them on here you'll find quite a bit of negative feedback on them. anyways, if its not at polaris west go for it.

Call him back and offer him 8400. That's how men negotiate.

I don't think so. I'm looking for a matte black 08 or 09.

If I could get the friggin' dealer to send me the pics, I would! Hehe. Yeah, I'll call the sales manager today and ask for photos since the sales manager seemed put off by me. If I get them by tomorrow, I'll just call, offer 9 and that'll be that. I hate all this "shopping" stuff.

Hehe. He'd probably pour sand in the gas tank and say "sure!"
