SPEED: Harley Davidson Coast to Coast

So i'm watching this right now on SPEED. It must be a HD sponsored episode showcasing HD's latest models, as a guy and a chic ride from L.A. to D.C.

... and they constantly show them riding side-by-side on a single lane road

On the Big Boy ride, I encountered a group of at least 16 Harleys on 105. All riding two abreast with no more than two bike lengths separating each row of bikes. I don't have the talent to ride that closely and 70+

It may not be the safest/smartest but its not illegal. (and btw, I tend to avoid it unless on the interstate.)
It's not an issue of legality. It's an issue of stupidity. What I'm surprised about is that this show seems to be HD supported, since it's all about Harleys, including Factory/Corp. Reps talking about their bikes and what makes them special. Then they show the 2 hosts riding side-by-side within a single lane. And yes, you're right... a 2 lane road (one lane going each direction).

I've seen a ton of Goldwings and ADV riders do it, compared to cruiser riders.
Sport bikes are ment for ... well sport riding. Cruisers are generally commuting or weekend warriors.

I have heard a few complaining about how many miles HD/cruiser owner's put on their bike less than 2k a year compared to sportbike rider putting 10k miles a year. All I know and see is that there are more HD/cruiser owners doing more road trips/ crosscountry riding than sportbike. So, how does a sportbike rider racks up so many miles if they don't do road trips or crosscountry riding? 1. most sportbike rider are young and only method of transportation oppose to cruiser as being wealthy/toy. 2. sportbike rider racking up more miles because they go for pp to pp(poser point).

Don't get me wrong. I have respect for anyone that rides. Just hate seeing threads about HD/cruiser being poser, slow or whatever. There are poser in any bike class or category. A bike has many functions and it's up to the individual to use it as they please.

no big deal riding beside someone, if i run up on a bike in traffic they usually share a lane with me.

I think it depends on how long they've been riding together. Usually the people I know that ride like that have ridden together for a long period of time. They practically know what the other is thinking. Going through a small town on a trip, we end up riding like that until we get out of town then split up again.

Actually I did like the show. As I said, it was the riding 2-abreast that disappointed me, but moreso in consideration that it appeared to be a HD sponsored show. It is common knowledge, especially for Industry Professionals, that this is not a safe way to ride, regardless of the experience level of the rider, or how comfortable they are riding side-by-side. Anything can happen when your riding, at any instant, including an animal running out onto the road from nowhere. If that were to happen, when riding 2-abreast, what do you think the consequences would be?

And btw, this is NOT an anti-HD thread. I dig cruisers and want one myself. If this were a Honda or Star curiser show, and they showed the same examples, I would have felt the same exact way. It just happened to be a HD show.

dude, it's not a big deal. motorcycle riders have been featured riding like that by every major brand in movies, tv shows, infomercials, promotional ads, etc. just let it go. it's always been like this. hence the disclaimers "professional riders on closed course, do not attempt"
