Thumbs up Guardian Angels are now in Houston

:notworthy :notworthy

Shots fired in Sharpstown as Guardian Angels arrive

By Rhea Davis

Minutes before the Guardian Angels arrived at Sharpstown Mall today, a brawl erupted near the entrance of the shopping center and a teenager pulled out a gun, firing three shots before fleeing the scene.

As security guards and police officers picked up the shell casings and investigated the shooting, Guardian Angel Arnaldo Salinas began recruiting people willing to fight back against the violence.

''I want to talk with people and find out what the general sentiments are out there and gauge from that how many people I can get who want to be part of the solution instead of the problem,'' he said.

The Angels were alerted to problems in the Sharpstown area after getting a call from Jeff Schmidt, who heard one too many gunshots popping in his southwest Houston neighborhood and decided to do something about it.

Across Houston, the annual homicide rate was up 23 percent last year. By comparison, other cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Dallas and Miami saw theirs go down. With 336 homicides, or about 16 per 100,000 residents, Houston had one of the highest rates of large cities.

Police Chief Harold Hurtt has attributed the rise in violence to a variety of factors, including increased gang activity, the influx of Hurricane Katrina evacuees and poor management of apartment complexes that are breeding grounds for crime.

When the Angels arrived at the shopping center, a woman rushed up to the Angels and told them about the shooting. When asked if she would be willing to join the group, she said no.

''I'm just going to go get this errand done for my son and get home before I get shot,'' she yelled as she ran into the mall.

But not everyone declined the invitation.

James Elvgren, said he was interested in joining the group.

''It will be good for the Guardian Angels to be here because this is a rough area,'' he said. ''I might give them a call.'

The Guardian Angels was formed 26 years ago by Curtis Sliwa to fight crime in a Bronx neighborhood. The group has since grown from 13 to 5,000 members, with 41 chapters nationwide. It also has chapters in Brazil, Canada and Japan.

The group's mission is to deter crime through community empowerment. Besides neighborhood patrols, the group also has school-based educational programs to steer teenagers away from crime.

''We're not mercenaries. We're not police," said Salinas, the senior director of the group, earlier this month. "We're going to galvanize the community to take care of itself. We're a vehicle for good people to stand up and be counted."

what are they going to do about it?? i don't understand? is it like a beefed up Citizens on Patrol? Are they going to walk the street with baseball bats and rough up hoodlums? Aren't they insulting the HPD by coming in and doing their job for them? and if so, good on them.

Something needs to be done. Sharpstown is not a nice area and has been sliding down hill for years. If HPD cannot clean up the trash... I'm open to other alternatives.

HPD cops on the scene were pretty about them being there, like they showed up just in time for the media, as shots rang out.

somethings gotta be done, HPD isn't too good of a job right now, not entirely their fault. but nothings wrong w/ citizens patroling and helping their own community.

Crime rate is down in Cypress.... may have something to do with being the second largest population of conceal gun licensees in TX. :dontknow:

HPD is 700 cops short...thats why they are offering a $7000 sign on bonus
