Sepang test: James Toseland suffering after 125mph crash
By Matthew Birt

MotoGP

06 February 2009 14:56

Battered and bruised British rider James Toseland bravely rode through the pain barrier in Sepang today – just 24 hours after his miraculous escape from serious injury in a 125mph high-side.

Struggling with a painful blow to his right arm and severe bruising on the inside of his left leg, Toseland didn’t take to the track until nearly midday as he underwent lengthy treatment in the Clinica Mobile.

Get all the latest MotoGP news
The double World Superbike champion was in such severe pain after yesterday’s massive crash that he doubted whether he could ride today.

He spent a largely sleepless night in his Kuala Lumpur hotel and as the hours passed the pain to his injuries only worsened.

“Today has been really, really tough, “said Toseland, speaking to MCN while undergoing further treatment in the Clinica Mobile office tonight. “I’m just glad to get back out there and back on the bike and riding round after yesterday.”

Toseland’s physical problems were evident in the timesheets as he finished slowest with a best of 2.04.597 in a 36-lap stint.

His priority though today was trying to restore some of his shattered confidence after he lost control of his Tech 3 Yamaha YZR-M1 at turn five on the first afternoon.

“I wasn’t going to push too hard today and by the end I was starting to enjoy it again. I’ve damaged a tendon on my right tricep and in one position it is fine. But any movement and it is agony.

"I just couldn’t brake hard enough and that’s what you need to do on these bikes. I needed some injections in my arm this morning because it was that painful I didn’t think I was going to ride, “said Toseland.

Toseland will undergo more treatment tomorrow morning but he does plan to ride on the third and final day.

American Colin Edwards shrugged off a niggling neck injury to make a brilliant start to 2009, the Tech 3 Yamaha rider clocking the fourth best time in Sepang.

Making his debut on the 2009 Yamaha YZR-M1, the double World Superbike champion set a best time of 2.01.413 in a short 22-lap stint on the final day.

That left him just 0.370s off the best pace set by 2007 MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner and 0.27s slower than Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi.

Edwards, who was also making only his second appearance on Bridgestone tyres, was 1.4s faster than his best 2008 Malaysian GP race lap on Michelin rubber.

The Texan said: “I am really happy with this test because each time I’ve gone out on track I’ve made progress.

"The bike was so good on the first day it was hard to think how to make it any better. Yamaha has done a fantastic job on the new YZR-M1.

"The engine is better, the chassis is better and with Bridgestone tyres, we’ve got a really competitive package. I haven’t done a lot of laps but I’ve gone for quality rather than quantity.

"I did a long run on the second day just for my own database on Bridgestone and I’ve got to say they have a great product.”

Satisfied with his progress, Edwards packed up before 130pm this afternoon to head back to America for a medical check on his neck.

Edwards first damaged his neck when crashing out of the top six in a rain-lashed Sachsenring clash last July.

But he aggravated the old injury when putting his Arai helmet on for a run on the first day.

He added: “It was like a bolt of lightning going through my head. I first injured it when I crashed in the Sachsenring race last year and then it was giving a lot of trouble at Laguna Seca.

"I’ll fly home to Texas and get it checked out. It was manageable on the bike and certainly didn’t hurt my lap time once I had the adrenaline going, but I want to make sure I’m going to be 100 per cent fit for the start of the season.

"This test has left me really confident and optimistic for the new season already and I can’t wait for the next test in Qatar.”

Edwards will be back on track on March 1 for the night test at the Losail International Circuit in Doha.

James Toseland may have avoided broken bones during a huge 200km/h highside - the biggest accident of his career - on Thursday at Sepang, but a hard bang on the head and heavy bruising meant the Briton could accomplish little during the following two days.

The Tech 3 Yamaha rider was making his debut on the 2009 YZR-M1 at the Malaysian test, but went 'too fast too soon' during his first ever run on the hardest compound Bridgestone tyre - with painful consequences.

“It's just my head,” a sick looking Toseland told Crash.net before leaving Sepang on Saturday evening. “I landed on my head and concentration has been an issue ever since. I'm banged up, but I was so lucky not to come away with a broken bone.

“It happened when I went out on the harder compound tyre for the first time - last time at Jerez [in November] Bridgestone had brought the soft and medium compounds - and it was just my inexperience. I didn't get the left hand side of the tyre up to temperature so when I got to the first left hander, on my first flying lap, it just chucked me off.

“It was 200km/h. I was just lucky not to be more badly hurt, but I think it knocked me out as I can't remember the ambulance ride back to the pits. I can't remember a lot of what happened to be honest, which is a bit strange. I'll go home and get checked out because I just couldn't focus after that.”

Toseland's hopes of a fast lap time were eliminated by the accident, but that didn't stop the determined Briton getting back on track before the day had finished.

“I got back out for the last 45 minutes on the same day, because with a big crash like that it's important just to get back out there and get riding again,” he explained. “It was the biggest crash I've ever had.”
