I have tried some soft bags. Aside from the quality ones going around $200, they would be very wide and short. This resulted in them bending inwards and creating all sorts of airflow drag.

Then there was the issue of weather. The soft bags you would have to take off when it rained, the ammo cans are water-tight. So I can leave them on when I go to class.
