chopper and Harley people?

Well I'm finally gonna start the rebuild on the shovelhead this year and had some questions, I was wanting to go with an open primary and springer front end, but was told those are both strictly cosmetic and a waste of money, the open primary doesn't do anything for the bike and cost to much and that the springer front ends are old technology and it will hurt the control and ride of the bike. Can anyone else give me their opinions about these to items?

I've got an open primary on the Bourget and while I love the way it looks and sounds, it's a pain in the . You'd be amazed how often stones and debris gets flung into the belt. It either holes the belt or, as it did the first time, shells the transmission. I don't think it's worth the hassle.

open primary seems like a good way to ruin a pant leg. springers may be old tech but they look bad

Because the engine has been bored and stoked to a 1486cc, heads milled 30, solid lifters, radical cam, S&S super e carb,&strapped to a 3 speed tranny ill put it up against 98% of the bikes on here in the 1/8. Lol but I do want it more show and maybe swap out the tranny out to a 5 speed so I can ride long distance.

Yeah I like the Bobbers but I'm not sure where I'm going with this build yet, if I build a bobber or stretch out the frame it would be a waste to put this motor and tranny my dad built into it. My dad wanted it set up for drag racing but died before we could finish it so I think I want to keep with the drag setup.

today most open primary r 3" belt (either BDL and Primo and some other brands with center support bearing...) can handle big engine and heavy bikes and lighter than close type primary (bike balance much better with either left side drive or right side drive),some may pack more clutch plates(9 instead 7),down side is as Curt has mentioned might get debris,rock...not sure bout clutch get cooler between both types.
springer r good looking style, nearly maint. & trouble free.handling and comfortable ride depend on how carefull & precise set up springs and damper shocks for bike & rider weights & size of front tire.
i like them both open primary and springer front end !

Yeah thats what i thought on the springer front end, even though its old technology, it seems they would have made vast improvements but kept the old styling
