IMO you will need some college exp...even an assoc. would help a lot. You may want to expand your CAD skills a bit into the 3D world as AutoCAD is now quite outdated. I would suggest Pro/E, CATIA, or maybe solidworks (substandard imo though). Job chances are very good with an assoc and some 3D design experience. i'm an engineer, and we just hired on 2 new mechanical designers on our team this year (one of 'em is for me... )

From my position of sour grapes being in the aerospace industry we definitely have caps on salaries that don't approach 120K/year for mere designers. The only conforting thought is the oil bubble right now will burst sooner or later like it did in the late 80's while aerospace is a bit more stable. But those salaries ROCK

did you mean "confuting thought" or "comforting thought"??? lol i fail to see how thats a comforting thought, unless you like the idea of our work going overseas so the cheap indians can work for 1/10 of what we do hear, in return fuking up our work market here in the U.S. which means shittier, more dangerous, petro refineries in our own home, and abroad....

but your right... the oil industry is up and down.... i just figure i can hook up with a company looking to train entry level, that way i can get my foot in the door, and if this boom lasts 5 years.... ill have 5 years experience under my belt...

btw. i might have an interview this week for a shop that needs an entry level designer to learn/design control systems...

Big engineering companys hire and fire like no other. I choose to stay in a smaller firm alittle less pay but have a less chance to get fired on a whim. To each thier own.

As a former Bechtel brat I'm kind of partial, but I would concur that you should look at the smaller firms too. More exposure. Yes Bechtel, Fluor, Jacobs, etc., are looking but it was also mentioned they purge their ranks every now and again. Yes the babyboomers are retiring, hence more hiring, but you also have to understand that some of these positions get more difficult to fill because people have grown tired of being layed-off when there is a downturn so they are reluctant to go back working for one of the major E&C's.
There is a small company in this building called SNC-Lavalin GDS. From what I've read, they are an up and comer in the industry.

realize smaller firms don't pay the $55/hr.............

so big firm= big $ and uncertainty
small firms= less $, more stability work wise.
